Laptop with screen display problems
I have a HP Pavilion Laptop zv5000 here which is temperamental on booting to Windows. Behaviour is peculiar in that when I hit F8 to boot to safe mode, the text which comes up on the screen is all mis-spelled and stuff. E.g "Boot to Wandows nrgmally" is one of the lines. But all of the text on the screen is garbled really.
When I select one of the options, the PC then attempts to load Windows but after the Windows XP loading bar has been on for a minute or so, I get the boot options screen again. (Safe mode, Boot Normally...et.c.). If I leave it alone for maybe half an hour, it will eventually load Windows XP and everything looks fine except that the screen res has been adjusted to 800x600. Then, after a short time the screen displays vertical lines and becomes messed up where I have to start the whole process again.
I can't do system recovery because the machine won't let me boot from recovery CD (even though I set it to do so from the BIOS setup menu). I have tried hitting all sorts of key combinations to initiate the built-in recovery, F10, F11, F12. To no avail! This machine just doesn't want to know.
I'm about to give up on this thing if I don't get some help!
My thought is that the display drivers are corrupt.
