disabling microphones in XP

Hello. Does anyone know how to disable a microphone which is part of the computer? I don:t mean a microphone that you plug into the computer but one that is part of the computer. Many computers have some microphone built into the computer. Sometimes I cannot even find where the little hole is that is the mic but seems like many have such a mic built in. Does anyone know where in XP that I can disable the microphone?
Thank you.

May I ask why you wish to dis-able it? if you can't find it you can't use it?
What's the make of your laptop?
Brand name?
On my Acer laptop the hardware mic is a small hole at the front end> left side> number 2 position.
the inbuilt is on top above this.
Usually there is a very small dark glass window in front of IrDA transceivers just like TV remotes
Number one as shown in my snap.

Hi, I only want to disable the mic that comes with the computer. I want to use another mic and on some video conferencing applications the mic on the computer inteferes with and causes echo. SO I want to know how to disable just that mic???
Thank you
yep I understand,  firstly echoes can be caused if the mic is too close to your speakers it causes a feedback, either move away from your speakers or use a different style of mic, a head set with mic can be a work around.
Whar is happening your mic is hearing the sound coming back from the speakers.
Can you turn down the speakers?
this is what I would do to turn off the mic options though I dont think this is your only problem.
If you have XP go to your taskbar VOL.>options>properties>recording and dis-able the different mic's.
I'm not on my laptop now so can't remember the exact settings.
Also uncheck in the 'other'
uncheck the appropiate in  playback as well
then return to playback and put a tick back in there.
close it, reduce the volume on the speakers

see if that helps

in that case go to my suggestion and disable the mic.  when you plug in a new mic, you will be able to use that mic, it will not be X'd out.

I knew that was your question and that is the correct answer

HI, when you said "go to control panel, double click sounds and audio, click on advanced tab on vloume, if you do not ahve the mic there go to options properties and uncheck the mics", did you mean if you do have the mic there go to options and properties and uncheck the mics? And what about muting the mic? will that mute just the computer's mic?

you said you had the internal mic, which you want to shut off/disable.  mute the mic is the same as disable.

Right click My Computer > "Properties" > "Hardware" Tab > click "Device Manager" button ......
under device manager, search for microphone, then right click > "Disable"

This will be another way also (as in second comments) , can have a try .............
Forced accept.
