could also be overheating..check what shows in the bios
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsA friend of mine gave me a Dell Latitude D400 with some parts missing. I just got and installed a 60 GB hard drive and a small memory chip (128MB); still mssing the battery and the external CD ROM.; It does not have an OS installed, but I've tried to start the laptop and at least see if it boots up and maybe go to the CMOS setup. Well, when I press the power button, I can see the power light ON, the HD light ON and the UPPER CASE LETTER FUNCTION BUTTON light flashing, after some 10 seconds, thie laptop turns itself OFF.
Will appreciate if some of the experts can tell me what's going on, if this has to do with Dell BIOS password protection, etc.
TIA for any input, help.

Most likely not a bios password protection problem. To me, sounds like a Motherboard or CPU problem. Not enough information to really go upon.
You dont need the optical drive or hard drive for the laptop to post. So no need for those devices. Usually if it is a ram problem, the system may send a series of beeps...not just shut off. If the laptop is shutting off then most likely again as I stated motherboard or cpu problem.
