After much time wasting, I could not get wake on Lan or wake on USB to work. Nuts to this.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI almost always run my inspiron 9300 laptop in the "closed" position. I use an external monitor, and usb keyboard and mouse. (I do not use the laptop keyboard/monitor at all).
This makes for a nice slim package that I could probably simply get out of my way completely (for example, in a small space beneath my monitor on one-a-dem crt monitor stands they sell as an extra with the port-replicator), except for one problem: the power button is located above the laptop keyboard, accessible only if I have the lid opened.
Is there an alternate way to power on my laptop that does not involve opening the laptop? It has media keys on the outside (mute, volume, etc) but scancode mapping etc does not seem low-level enough to stand-in for a power-on button.

Not sure but some expansion docks or dockingstations could have a power button on them...I dont see any at the moment. But this could help if you do transport the laptop on occasion as well. Since it is a pretty easy USB Plug into the laptop. If your laptop supports wake on USB then using the expansion dock that plugs into the usb port could work great! com/defaul t.asp?news ID=3159

So..I did some searching, there does not appear to be any good docks/port replicators that have power buttons on them...at least not for the USB Flavor or Dell.
So you may need to research if the laptop will wake on USB....
