Reading throught your questions again, i did not quiet understood why you want to copy the data, if motherboard died and they will replace motherboard the harddrive will not be effected in any way. If motherboard is exactly same model they will be able to swap them out and you will go back to working on your laptop like nothing happened. Also if that is the case i will recomend getting some external harddrive shells that you can buy very cheap, but in future if you hard drive dies you will have data backed up on external media.

Just hook the HD up to another vista machine and you shoudl be able to read the contents without a problem as long as you didn't encrypt it.
