Can I tighten the monitor (screen) on a Presario 1500 Notebook - currently there is absolutely no resistance after I open the lid - it goes all the way back.

is that rather an old one? then i suppose the only way would be by replacing the hinges.

I agree with Nobus.  Most likely they are broken and need replacing.
I've had to replace a number of them for my customers.  Here's a link to some that are available on Ebay Currently:

As far as I know these hinges are really not repairable once broken...especially if they are cracked or have rips or tears anywhere on them.  you can't glue them or epoxy them or weld them.  Because they need to be free floating so that they can turn to open the screen and close it.  So probably purchasing replacements is the way to go.
