Question

Dell Latitude D600 - No boot device found

Asked by: ComputerPros-ga

I have a Dell Latitude D600 with a small 40 GB IDE drive .. replaced the drive with same model but still get No Boot Device Found on bootup.  Diags show DST Short Test failed with error code 1000-0141.  I've reseated the HDD and can't get it to show up in BIOS.  I have an original XP Home CD that starts the Windows install (self booting CD) but it also says no HDD found to install Windows.  Does anyone know what I'm missing here???

DST Short Test failed means Disk Self Test short test failed, in other  words you hard drive is faulty and needs replacement.

Double check your BIOS settings specifically for hard drive settings. I've worked on several Dell's that have options for installed drives such as SATA only, AHCI, etc. For example within the BIOS if SATA0 is set to disabled and your drive is on SATA0 the BIOS will not detect it. Setting SATA0, SATA1, etc. to Enabled may allow the BIOS to detect the drive.
If your drive is a SATA during the OS setup, watch the bottom of the screen for a prompt requesting that you hit F6 to install SATA/RAID drivers. Before setup begins you will be prompted for the device driver for the hard drive.

The IDE drive failed, replaced with another IDE drive with same model number .. but still does show in BIOS.  Anyone know how to reset the BIOS or somehow get it to recognize the new HDD?  I also did not find any BIOS settings for SATA, AHCI, etc since it's an older model laptop.

If you can't get it to show in the bios, and this is a brand new drive, your controller may be faulty.  What is listed in your boot order?

David-Howard,
Latitude D600 was released in 2003, in this time laptops never heard a word SATA.

ComputerPros-ga,
Are you sure that other hard drive is not faulty, also for laptop does not matter hdd model number, important is size (2.5") and socket (IDE or just ATA).
Have you another hdd to try?

To reset the BIOS, pull out the battery and the reserve battery...the reserve battery is located to inside the main battery area, accessed by a latch.  Also, you can revert to defaults by pressing Alt-F in the bios...

Within your BIOS there should be an option to load factory defaults. You might give that a try.
You may also have some luck by running CHKDSK from the Recovery Console.
This link provides information on the Recovery Console and how to load it. You will need your OS CD.
(Note: Make sure that choose to boot from CD.)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
Specifically you will want to read Option 2: Starting the Windows Recovery Console from the Windows XP CD-ROM
Once the Recovery Console is loaded you can then run CHKDSK by typing the following command:
chkdsk c: /p
This command performs a full scan of the hard drive.
When it finishes, type exit to restart your computer.

When you installed the new drive did you take the adapter off the back of the old drive and install it on the new one? without the adapter the bios won't see the drive because it's not connected to the motherboard. Here's a link to what the adapter looks like.

Jamietoner: did't remember finding an adapter on the old HDD but this looks like the missing link to make the connection.  I'll try to find one locally but if not I can order it from bixnet.  THANKS!

gikkel: That's what I was looking for ALT-F for factory default settings .. tried it and it DID reset the BIOS but still doesn't see the HDD.  Thanks anyway.

Aliokas: Sorry but no other HDD available .. just the dead one and the new one I purchased.  Both are IDE drives and same model number too.

gikkel: Boot order shows CD first, then HDD, then FDD.  Not sure about the latest BIOS level yet.

Can you take the adapter off the old drive?
