I have had a few of these computer that have had audio problems where the sound didn't actually go "out", but instead was just so quiet that you could barely hear it.
The problem was a defective speaker. Dell used a metal (foil) speaker attached to a foam surround that would blow very easily. The speaker would actually push out of the surround.
They had a correction for the speaker. They made a new speaker out of plastic that is fused to the surround. You can find them on eBay fairly easy. You can find instructions online on how to remove/replace the speakers. If you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself, buy the speaker and then take the computer and the speaker to a local computer shop.

Does the sound work "ok" with headsets? Have you updated to the latest audio drivers? A little more info would be helpful. : )
