Fn F8 has stopped working on Dell Latitude 131L under W-XP SP3
Fn F8 has stopped working on Dell Latitude 131L under W-XP SP3. Extended desktop under advanced display properties works okay. But I cannot switch to either external or to dual (clone) mode.
If it failed working while in Windows (not from boot) it might be a problem with the Dell Quickset software. Try reinstalling it:

Are you able to type the keys Fn + F8 otherwise ? Can you connect another keyboard and check to isolate whether the keyboard has gone bad .........

The solution about the Nvidia drivers caught my eye. My machine uses ATI chipset and drivers, but I know that ATI sends updates now and then, which I automatically install (bad move). So I rolled back to the old ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 drivers that originally came with the machine from Dell. Everything is now back to normal. Apparently, the problem is in the most recent ATI drivers.
Incidentally, I have a second laptop (HP instead of Dell) with the same problem, but also with recently updated ATI drivers. I shall try rolling back that one also. Thank you.

i.e. Did you
install a windows update
install new software
install new drivers
where any of these auto installed to create the problem
If so try uninstalling the update, or software.
to view installed updates go to "control panel > add or remove programs > click alt + d to view installed updates.
do your other function keys work, is it an F-lock issue?
