Question

Hp laptop won't resume from hibernation

Asked by: emsp

Hi!

I was hoping someone could help me with a little hibernation issue that I've got.

PC: HP Elitebook 6930p
OS: Windows 7 x64

Here's the scenario:
When I'm at work my computer is docked and connected wirelessly to my work network (domain controlled). The dock has keyboard, mouse and monitor connected.

After work hours I close the lid, the computer hibernates, and then I undock the laptop. When I get home and try to start the pc from the hibernation, it won't resume - it's loading for a while, and I can hear soundeffects etc. but the screen is just empty/blank.

However, it's working when I hibernate from home and resume it at work.

Something tells me that this is related to the docking or the fact that the computer is connected to a domain controlled network at work. Even though I've tried to disconnect it from the network, as well as undock the PC before I close the lid for hibernation - but still the same problem when I get home to resume the hibernation.

Any suggestion guys?

Thanks!

ps. This also happened to another HP laptop I had, with Windows Xp installed. So I think this is non-os-related.

I have always had problems with HP laptop and Hibernation, so much so that I just turn it off now and resort to putting the laptop into sleep mode instead, not hibernate.

If you are removing it from a dock, you can't just put it to sleep/hibernate.  You should use the proper undocking procedure for your system before hibernating or sleeping.  The reason it has no display is because the dock was not ejected and it is confused!

Just to be clear here. I have tried both hibernating it while it is docked, and undocked, but the same result.

@arixsin
Could you please explain what a proper undocking procedure includes?

I can't say for sure on an HP, but usually you have to either press a special button on the dock (not the "eject" button) to tell the OS that you want to undock. The other option is to go to the "Safely remove hardware and eject media" icon in the system tray and choose "eject dock" or something similar (I don't have my dock with me to say exactly what it should say).

I have read a few places that it could be a video driver issue. Please try to update it and then try again.

Here are the rest of the Win7 driver for your system:

When you put a machine into hibernation your computer takes a "snapshot" of everything your computer is running. When you are docked your laptop is not using the same hardware (and obviously drivers) as when you are not docked. The reason you can go for laptop hibernation to docking station is because the laptop was using onboard hardware and drivers. When you dock it, everything loads that it needs to. When you hibernate a laptop on a docking station then remove it and try to boot the hardware is missing.

You do need to "safely" undock your laptop before removing it though. Your laptop is not very happy with you right now.

Is there a reason you are hibernating rather than shutting it down?

Thanks for the answers.

I will try to update video drivers etc. And also try so "safely" undock it from now. I will update you with the result on this.

Thanks again.
