okay i will try to explain. i am very sick with the flu so maybe in a day or so more details. basically computer with vista was upgraded to service pack 2 without them following the proper steps advised by hp.s website. it destroyed the system drive to its underecoverable (i can't type either tonight :-). samsung cd/dvd drive worked fine until that point. hp said we must send it back in and pay 400 for them to reload the software as it was the only solution. we had tried the recovery cds but they wouldn't work because of the cd/dvd not working any more. we didn't have 400, so owner bought windows 7. windows 7 also struggled on the install, but it finally completed.. yeahhhh! phew! but it only installed a vga driver. the cd/dvd playing a movie seemed to be working just fine. but the ownere is a video photographer for the marine corp and need good quality. so i went to nvidia's website and downloaded the proper video driver. the screen resolution was beautiful. you tube videos play great, but now the cd/dvd was not running properly again. tried to download driver from samsung but said it was not for the hp model but the vaio only. went to driver-pro and paid 29.95 for them to load the drivers, but it loaded something called ricoh something and then after that the cd/dvd would not work at all anymore... so frustrated... so tired... windows 7 also didn't load a driver for the coprocessor. these are the two final things not working with the system. the cd/dvd driver and coprocessor... whew.. this all the energy i have tonight. so grateful for your help.
First get on you feet again. The computer can wait.
That is a little bit strange. HP notebooks normally came with 2 cds (or DVDs). (Which is the model of notebook?).
One is operating system CD, the other has other programs, drivers,... ...normaly I don't use it and I update/download everything from internet - only stuff I really need.
If you are not able to reinstall from original Cd, there are only two posibilities:
1. CD media is bad (scrached, dirty). You can try reinstall with any other HP notebook media.
2. your cdrom is bad (or something in your PC is not working.
Or you had problems during installation?
yes davorin, you are correct except with Windows Vista, some do not come with any recovery dvds and you must buy them which we did. neither the recovery dvd or the application/driver recovery dvd would work. but to be fair, even the windows 7 dvd had some issues, but it did load. I literally put in over 20 hours just trying to get the dvds to run, living with blank screens for hours on ends just hoping with each breath something would work... thank you by the way.. feeling a little better. everything i have read and study points to the software causing the cd/dvd rom to not work properly and testing has almost surely shown this. that is why i was trying to find the right driver for it. still haven't.
I suspect a hardware issue rather than a software problem. To determine which it is, boot from a Knoppix CD and see how system behaves. If Knoppix is slow to load or CD/DVD drive performs slowly or erratically, you have a hardware problem.

Basic windows installation is a great diagnostics tool. It should always finish without problems and quick enough. If it is not that way, there is for sure something wrong with notebook. (let leave some booting or hdd controler issues regarding incorrect bios settings or no correct controller driver - you know - F6).
If your PC recognises CD unit, boots from it then it is not driver issue. At least at fresh install. And I also do not remember that I had to install CD rom driver manually at fresh installation.
It was some period in time, that HP did not give any restore CD when buying a PC. But now thanks god this has changed. In that period we have requested the recovery media from distributor for every single model - for free. And normally we have give the copy of media to every costumer - also for free.
