There is no mention of accessing the power jack. The screen would go dim to brighter depending in what position the ppower plug was held in, and the last time it was turned on it went thru normal start up, but abruply went into hibernation and has not been seen or heard from again.

I have used the same HP model and have used a 3rd party power adapter that didn't fit pefectly and had the same problem as what you are describing - a very finicky power connection depending on how the connector and wire is positioned.
Are you saying that the problem is still there even with the genuine HP power adapter?
Well, not exactly, but if it's not charging properly, it could simply be that it's going into hibernation because the battery is running low on power. Or it could be because of the finicky power connection, it constantly changed from charging to not charging, and this can cause the battery to become uncallibrated and not report the amount of power it has left. So even if the battery has 80% charge left, it might think it only has 5% left, and the default Windows power settings will at this point put it into hibernation.
There should be a light at the front of the laptop in the shape of a lightning bolt that indicates whether the battery is charging or not.
Cheapest would probably be eBay, but you just have to ensure that it's a genuine OEM part.
That's actually VERY reasonable for an AC adapter from the manufacturer. You can also get it here:

Well, first of all, I want to make it clear that based on the information here, I cannot be 100% sure that it is a problem with the power adapter and not the jack on the laptop, but it's just my best guess. Ideally if you could find a known working original HP power adapter to test with, that will give you a better idea if it is a problem with the power adapters or not. I don't want you to spend more than $50 only to find out it really is a problem with the jack instead.
Asides from that, the procedure to try and recallibrate the battery afterwards iscto go into the Power Settings and disable all the Battery Actions and set the system to never go to Standby or Hibernate. Charge the battery fully, then remove AC power and let the laptop run until it turns off from no more charge in the battery. You may want to repeat this a few times. Sometimes the battery can become so uncallibrated that this procedure won't correct it.
