HP Pavilion D5 caps lock and num lock lights are blinking continuously

I have an HP Pavilion dv5 laptop. I turned on my computer and all of the lights turned on, but the screen remained black. I powered it off but it did the same thing. The caps lock and number lock lights are blinking continuously. It is fully charged. When I plugged it into the charger, the charging light turns on

Try a cold boot.  Turn the laptop off, unplug it and remove the battery for about 30 seconds.  Reconnect everything and turn it back on.

I tried that already still same issue.
I have a DV9000 that behaved similar to this.  It turned out that HP had a design flaw and the video chip was getting so hot it was de-soldering itself from the system board.

I was able to repair it.

Have you noticed your laptop getting hot lately?

If it's still under warranty I'd have HP look at it.  If not the good news is your data is probably ok.  If the system board is fried you will need to have a new one installed.

Pull the HD and slave it off of another computer if you have one and copy your data.

The service manuals are online all you need to do is Google "HP your model service manual".

If you are fairly good with a screwdriver and directions you should be able to replace it yourself.

What I do is put all of the screws for each section on a piece of paper in a circle with that chapter's section written on it.

If you do replace the system board or have someone do it make sure to clean out the fan and its housing.  Lint can collect there and make a heat problem much worse.

DOH!!!! I forgot the first rule in laptop video testing...hook up an external monitor and turn on your laptop.

Do you see anything?

I can't belive I did't think of that first.

If you see something on the external monitor then the problem is with your laptop display.  If you don't the problem is with your system board.
here a nice article on how to reflow the chip :  http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=57021

i use a normal paint stripper gun - works well
i put a bit of solder in an empty bottle capsule(without cork or plastic) to see when it melts, then continue for 10 -20 sec

there are different methods - here bakin in an oven :  http://www.addictivetips.com/hardware/fix-your-graphics-card-by-baking-in-oven/

with heat gun :  http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2011/02/23/fix-laptop-motherboard-with-failed-nvidia-graphics-chip/
If it is a case where the video chip needs to be reflowed you can do a search on YouTube for many videos on techniques to do this.

I picked up my micro torch an an auto parts store.  Don't get the one where you use a re-fillable buetane lighter, get one that is all contained where you fill up the torch itself.

I picked mine up at Advancd Auto Parts.

This job is not for the faint of heart and should only be performed if you are sure this is your problem, you have no other options, and you are confident in your abilities.
using a torch would be my last resource - too dangerous
but you're free to try..
