Toshiba laptop powers on but screen is blank

We have a fairly new Toshiba NB305 laptop and when it turns on the screen is blank. I can see the hard drive activiity is flashing like it's booting up but the screen never comes on.

What could cause this?

Obtain a bootable CD (Ultimate Boot CD or a Knoppix CD) and try to boot from the CD. If the CD operating system starts, then the computer is probably OK, and something has happened to the hard drive and/or operating system on the hard drive.

Try the get the Ultimate Boot CD and then once started, try to access the hard drive. Can you do this without difficulty? If so, then the operating system may have failed.

Whatever at this point, contact Toshiba if under warranty and see what they suggest including accessing a recovery partition for purposes of doing a repair or a full recovery; or see if they wish to send you recovery DVD's.

So long as the hard drive is working, you can recover data from it if you need to restore the machine.
