Incorrect and incomplete information has been provided here....
Pentium 4 is CERTIFIED and SUPPORTED by Intel for SINGLE and DUAL CPU systems only.
Xeon is CERTIFIED and SUPPORTED by Intel for UNIPROCESSOR and MULTIPROCESSOR designs.
Note that there may be some other differences. All P4 class Xeon processors have 512K cache. Some P4 esktop processors have 256K cache others have 512K cache.
There are some other differences as well but chances are these will not make a significant difference in your performance.
In general, there is VERY LITTLE difference. I find no use for the overpriced Xeon line EXCEPT for those applications where > 2 CPUS are needed.

jhance:
Pentium4 CPU's are ONLY for uniprocessor workstations.
Dual Processor workstations use DP Xeons, and 4way and above workstations use MP Xeons (which are the same thing still, just one costs more than the other for the "certification")
Also not ALL P4 Xeons have 512k of L2 cache, the first generation (same as the first revision P4's) have 256K of cache.
Other than being "certified for multiprocessor systems" which means nothing in reality, there are no core differences between a P4 and a P4Xeon.
The Foster Xeons were supposed to offer up to a 1mb L2 or L3 cache, but they have never surfaced.

Sorry, my mistake. I was thinking something else when I wrote that...
The P4 Xeon is needed for anything mor than 1 CPU.
