CD-Write drive / Volume

When I copy CD-to-CD using my HP-write drive, the volume seems to be much lower on the copy compared to the original? has anyone else run across this? If so, is there any way to correct it?

I believe your problem is due to the fact that the drive which has the source disk is not reading in Digital Data extraction mode.  In other words, the music disc is being converted to analog, then back to digital to the cd copy.  I had this problem, too, and had to change drives.  After changing my source drive, it was an exact copy.

So would it be better to use a CD ripper to pull the tracks off the CD into a wav file, then write to the disc from my hard drive?

I'm guessing that any CD-ROM drive I buy would use Digital Data
extraction mode. Is that correct? My drive is about 3 years old, so it could very well be extremely outdated.

Lastly, with your volume problem, was the quality any different? With me, although the volume is lower, the quality is still very good. Hopefully, we have the same problem.

Strange as it sounds, not all CD-ROM drives handle Digital Audio Extraction very gracefully.  What I ended up doing was to do just as you suggest.  I used a CD ripper with the Source CD in my HP drive ( mine is an 8100i).  That is able to rip a single 4 minute track in about 20 seconds.  Then, I'd make the disk from that.

Yes, the quality was quite good, but quieter.  It sounds like the same problem.  One thing that might help clarify it is the amount of time it takes to rip a CD on the older CD drive, VS, on the HP.  My older Toshiba drive (12x), would rip CDs at approximately realtime - slow.  The HP can do it many times faster, as I said.  Try it out, and it may shed some light on what you have, there.
