HD crash

This is actually two questions, and I need answers to both...

Yesterday when I was copying a CD with Easy CD copier a "bleu screen" appeard that sad it could not write to drive C (the temporary disk when copying). The computer slowed down real hard and the system got busy. The blue screen appeared several times. The only thing was to hard reset the computer. It restarted and scandisk started. After running scandisk several times to fix all problems I tried to copy the CD agian. The same thing happend but at a later stage in the copy process. I reseted again, but now the harddisk "disappeared". Probebly was the bootblock damaged. I started fdisk to check my harddisk. It was not even partitioned!

The first, and most important question is, how, not if, can I get the information on the harddisk back? There must exist recovery tools that can read undamaged parts of the bootblock and restore my files.

And second, why did the blue screen appear? I have seen this problem before with another computer, and there it was solved by putting the CD reader and the HD on the same IDE cable.

My configuration is:
Pentium MMX 166 MHz, 64 MB ram, 2 HD's (4.3 GB and 1.2 GB) connected to the same IDE cable, 32x IDE CD-rom as secondary IDE master, SCSI CD-writer.

The CD was copied from the CD-writer and temporary stored in the C harddrifve (4.3 GB).
