I know with mine it takes like 10-15 seconds for it to autorun stuff because I have a really fast (56x) cd-rom drive and it has to get the drive spinning up to full speed before it will run the program.  Put in the data cd and give it a bit before jumping the gun and going to Explorer.

Have you checked that the auto insert notification is selected in the device manager? To do so, right click My Computer click Device Manager, drop down the CD Rom, click on it select properties, click settings, and there should be a check in the Auto insert notification box. If not check it, apply, and re-boot, if so, I would simply first try unchecking it, re-checking it, and apply, and re-boot, see if it works, Regards, Mal.

have you recently uninstalled the Earthlink software?  I did when I changed providers, and the uninstallation had the same effect, I lost autoplay for data CD's,and retained it for audio.  The only solution for this is to reinstall everything on your computer to regain autoplay.

Check the manufacturer's web site against the BIOS settings for the CDROM.  Some drives are designed to work in a specific PIO mode, while the BIOS sets them to another.

Also check settings for the CDROM in device manager; make sure you have the manufacturer's recommendations there as well (for DMA, disconnect, sync data transfer, ...)

Try removing the CD-Rom in the Device Manager and reboot and let windows detect and reinstall and then verify that auto-insert is checked in CD properties and try a data CD again.

This remains open today.

Would you like to update this with current situation to resolve, or delete if unresolved as per your last statement?  It's in your control.  If more is needed, an update would be worthwhile since so much time has passed and so many patches and updates to OS, drivers, api's, etc.

We have one system that drives me up a wall, as I just read this, and appears similar.  It exhibits this behavior as well.  Here's what works for me... insert the data CD before booting your system.  Amazing how it addressed this for us.  Maybe it'll work magic for you as well.

Interersting comments and even more interesting in terms of the grade.  I was actually only trying to help get input from you and revive this so you can, indeed, get what you need.  I don't understand why you didn't just DELETE this and regain your points if we didn't help you.  Perhaps you can send an Email request to cs@experts-exchange.com or post a zero point questin in Community Support to delete this question and refund your points.
