serial and com port problems

I am running windows 98 on a Pentium 200 mmx over clocked to a 266.

The problem I'm having is that my 25 pin seial port is not working.

I checked in my bios at start up and it says that serial port 1 is in auto, and serial port 2 is disabled. When I tried all the different variations to enable it, when my computer starts up and is running, my D drive (cd rom) is not working and my E drive (cd writer) is no longer there.

In my device manager I checked in the com and lpt ports and it says I only have a communication port (com 1) and a printer port (Lpt 1).

My mouse is using com1 and modem is using com4.

How can I get the other serial port to work so I can hook up my Palm Pilot Hot sync cradle? It says that I need an unshared com port, and it connects into a serial port.
