The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How to recover 'lost' files in Dlink DMP100 flash memory

Asked by jzanette in Miscellaneous Hardware

I have a Dlink DMP100 MP3 Player/Voice Recorder with 32MB builtin and 32MB on a SmartMedia expansion card.  I use it mostly for voice recording and have recently experienced a disaster.

While recording to the internal 32MB, the directory entry (VoiceNNN) is created when STOPPING the recording.  The data that is being stored during recording can be completely wiped out at any time by stopping the recording process by any method except pressing the "Stop" button (for example, if the batteries go dead during recording).

When stopping my latest recording (using the correct method), the player indicated "Unknown Name" instead of the usual "VoiceNNN".  As I had three previous recordings also already "saved", I quickly went to the computer to salvage what I could.  The DMP100 was frozen up so I had to remove and reinstall the batteries to get it back in operation.  When I did, the display indicated "No File" (an empty directory).  The external SmartMedia memory, which contained an MP3 file, was unaffected by this problem.

I really need these recordings back and I know the data is stored in the internal 32MB of the DMP100.  What software tools, processes or companies are available to get these recordings back?

And, for future reference, if this were a PCMCIA, CompactFlash or SmartMedia card that contained the "deleted" files, what methods could be used to recover this data?
