Also check system properties under safe mode and make sure you don't have the old modems hanging around in the Modems section.

Browse All TopicsI have been trying to install a modem by Puretek with no luck and also tried a Winmodem that works fine in my computer but not the one I am trying to install a modem in.
The OS, Win 98, recognizes the new modem and I have used the install CD and update drivers from the internet for the drivers when asked to locate them. Drivers install fine, no comflicts are listed, and device manager says that the device is working correctly. However, AOL, modem doctor, and other software on the computer cannot see the modem. The mboard is an old Aristo with 4 PCI and 3 ISA slots. No onboard modem to disable. I have checked bios settings and cannot find anything relevant, except to let the OS handle PNP.
Why does the OS recognize the modem, but not software--including the diagnostics tab under "modems" in the control panel? I need to get this done because the person Im doing it for is getting impatient. Damn! Please help.

Was the original modem ISA or PCI? If the puretek or the winmodem are PCI and I assume they are then have you tried putting the modem in a different PCI slot? If there is a sound card or other PCI card that isn't essential then remove it and then try the modem as the slot may be shared and only one or the other may be able to be used at a time. I had a similar problem with an older PB and a PCI sound card and PCI modem where either or would work but not both and I had to buy a 16 bit ISA sound card to get both working. Have you tried to install an ISA modem? If one is available try it.

Is this an internal modem? If so, (ouch!) try disabling on-board COM ports, if they are not in use. (in the BIOS). Remove the drivers and re-install. This may do the trick.
