Question

What motherboard for AMD XP?

Asked by: mh2

Hi,

I am thinking of upgrading my machine. I was planning on an AMD 1.7XP+ with a suitable motherboard and DDR memory.

What would be your motherboard recommendation for this? I have been looking at the EPoX boards which are supposed to be good in the AMD?

Thankx,
Mark

Take a look at Soyo and Giga-Byte, I have used both with much success. I haven't had any issues to speak of with these boards. They are quality boards as I am sure Epox would also be, but I can't recommend it as I haven't used them.

When selecting a board take a look at the features and select one that would best suit your needs such as onboard lan, WOL etc. The latest chipsets, are nice although I don't always go with them for my own reasons which are probably not relevant to your question, and before purchasing any board search for reviews,
www.Tomshardware.com usually has helpful reviews of the latest boards and compares features and they also recently reviewed 40 or so CPU cooling fan and heatsink combinations this may be worth looking at also.

Enjoy your new system.

Epox are great boards.  Soyo board have everything on the board (nic, sound, etc..) but are not so great at overclocking.  Abit boards are great for overclocking (most of the time).

Choice really depends on your budget, you can get an end of line deal on a reasonable MSI or Gigabyte KT266A based board for around $60 or you can go for a top of the line Asus for $300 or so. 266 DDR RAM will cost less than 333 or better DDR too. IF you want something that has a chance of taking later processors, like the new thoroughbred core or forthcoming barton core, then you need to look at KT333 based boards.

I liked my Soyo when it first arrived.  Then one day it died and turns out you need to write a check to Soyo for $15 in addition to paying shipping if you want a replacement under the warranty.  I don't mind paying shipping, but it turns out that out of warranty boards will be replaced by Soyo for $20 and in warranty ones need 'only' $15.  Not much of a warranty program, if you ask me.

Next time I'll go with MSI, which a friend got and it seems pretty nice.  The 'warranty' is not a shakedown, either.  But be careful which you pick, MSI makes cheap low-end boards as well as expensive high end ones.  This goes for most manufacturers.

I'd have to say that the best board right now if you're not going to overclock would be the ECS K7VTA3.  This little bad boy comes with Raid onboard and sells for $69 (egghead.com).

If anyone has any worries about it's quality, then no need to worry.  Abit is outsourcing their boards for ECS to make.

kannabis, the RAID, LAN, and USB2 are all listed as 'optional' so I wonder if the 69$ version has any of those.

Magarity, no on USB 2.0, but yes on the RAID.  The picture shows the board with the LAN.  I think it has to do with the revision number of the mobo as to what features it has.

Still a great deal if you ask me.
