Question

DVD for backups

Asked by: melvynmyers

Hi all!

Can DVDRW (plus or minus) be used to perform automatic nightly backups??

Each day (Monday to Friday) I would like to insert a blank DVD into the drive and at night it should automatically burn a specified directory to disc. Then in the morning I can take the newly recorded DVD... with all my files.

Cheers,

Mel

Here is some software:

Can we assume your data will fit on a single DVD-RW disk?  Furthermore, do you know about incremental backups?

Otherwise, yes, you can do automated backups.  Wakeup has provided a list of some.  Since this is a DVDRW disk, I assume you can access it as a drive letter with DirectCD or similar.  If you use MS Windows, you can use the built in MSBackup program, if available in your version.  It can be set to back up on certain times and dates.  It also does incremental backups, which will save you a small fortune in disks.  If it is on your system, you've already paid for it as part of Windows, so you might as well use it.

Thanks for the swift response.

The backup part is fine - I have various software programs that perform that part of the operation. The catch was copying the files to the DVD-RW as if it was a normal drive volume.

I have looked at the DirectCD software and it appears that it should do the trick. It'll be a couple of weeks before I can test this... but I'll post the results back here.

Using DirectCD (or DVD), can the DVD-RWs used be read in a normal DVD drive??? Or can it only be read in DVD recorders??

Cheers,

Mel

"Using DirectCD (or DVD), can the DVD-RWs used be read in a normal DVD drive"

I assume it is the same as a CD-RW.  A normal drive can read them but the computer needs the reader software installed.  DirectCD comes with a small version of itself that allows reading a CD-RW on a computer without the full version of DirectCD installed.  It needs this because a CDRW in RW mode does not use the standard CDROM file directory format.  A DVDRW will be the same way.

I have used the Windows backup program to write to CD-RW without any problems with DirectCD installed.

Sorry about the delay getting back.  Never ended up using the DVD-RW, but based on subsequent experience, your comment is correct.
