The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

COM and modems again

Asked by dba123 in Miscellaneous Hardware

I am an experienced hardware and programmer professional yet I still have a crazy time with COM changes on modems.  I simply was pluggin in some USB devices and installed some drivers for a video CAM and somehow now my  modem will not connect with COM2.  COM 2 shows that is is already used and it keeps trying to refer to COM3 the classis problem with modems whereas COM3 insn't installed in System Devices nor can it be added.  COM 4 and COM 5 when I add them using Add Hardware will not install fully and end up with conflict no matter if I go into COM4 and COM 5 to manually select the I/O and IRQ for these devices.

Anyways, I think COM 1 and COM 3 can't be used simotaneuosly and same for COM 2 and COM 4.

The modem is simply a standard Creative modem.  The OS is Win XP, not sure if the modem is XP compliant but I do know it was working fine in XP until it cannot use COM2 anymore and is a fairly new modem, about a year old.

So, any advice on why COM 2 shows used and why I can't figure how how to get my modem to revert back to it?  Also, I have tried to unistall many devices in System Devices that use different ports so that hopefully they would end up all reinstalling after the boot and maybe find new IRQs or ports but that did not work.  They all came back but with the same setup.

Just tell me how to get this damn modem to work again with the old COM port.  I know that DSL is better but this user can't afford it so they are stuck with a 56K modem for now and for the life of me, I have tried everything.
