The voice device is suspect... can you try without this unit in the machine?

Browse All TopicsI'm having trouble getting my system to work with my only two ISA boards, the audio/game and modem/voice ones mentioned above. And it's ridiculous, because my SB wants IRQ 5 and DMA 1,5 while the modem is set up to be ttyS1 (COM2), IRQ 3. I wonder if the voice device is causing trouble... But shouldn't at least the modem dial out? When I turn it up with both boards attached, the modem won't reply to my AT commands issued in minicom. It takes forever for the echo to appear on the terminal and the modem is dead, doesn't accept any commands, like if they were being sent to the wrong serial port, you know...
I have disabled on-board USB and serial port 2, left serial 1 because my mouse is at ttyS0.
Any ideas? The only other hardware I have is a PCI video board, SiS 305 and an ethernet card, Realtek Fast Ethernet (8139too module probed), both PCI.
I must tell you I had trouble to boot kernels from the 2.4.x family until I swapped the PCI boards. I also would like to know if it's necessary for the VGA board to have an IRQ assigned to it, because I could disable that from the BIOS Setup.
I think that's all... Thanks!

most older video cards need an irq
i would assign an irq to each slot you have hardware in
most pci's share irq/slot locations,, try moving some devices. set video to irq 11 and NIC to irq 10
set your sound to irq 5 dma 1/5 i/o 220 some network cards claim irq 5.
put the sound card to the far left next to the 16/8 bit slots and put your modem 2 slots left of the video. then NIC left of modem.
printer 7
sound 5
modem 3
video 11
NIC 10
Good Luck
In your bios goto the section where you can control the resources. There's a voice, the first (normally), that says "Resources controlled by " and the parameter is AUTO. Set the parameter to MANUAL and read the list of options that appars below. Try to set "Isa/Pnp" on some IRQ, which normally are set to "PCI". E.g., try it on IRQ 5 and 3. Switch the parameter "Force Updating ESCD" to YES (if my memory doesn't jokes), and save all modifications, then restart the PC.
If you have Windows 98 like s.o., you must go to peripheral management to do the rest. Once you set the IRQ on the bios reserved to ISA, probably you must unistall and then reinstall the peripherals drivers.
If you take no good result, sorry, but this handling, under W98 and similar, looks like a dice-roll, and the success is strictly connected to ... luck. "Alea jacta est" (Julius Caesar)

I almost forgot... I have disabled the parallel port too, I have no need for a printer at home. Thanks!
