The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

CAT5 network wall jack, with male/male wire?

Asked by helpmealot in Miscellaneous Hardware, Network Cards & Adapters, Networking Cables

Hello,

We've been doing some remodelling around the house.  Since everything is torn up, we thought it'd be a great time to run some CAT5 cables from the network hub downstairs to the other rooms.

We already have a 100 foot CAT5 male/male cable, and were hoping to use it.  One end would connect directly to the hub (we wouldn't bother with a wall jack there).  The other end, though, we want to hook up to a face plate.  Unfortunately, we can't find anything which would allow us to do something like this ( -> denotes "connects to", / separates one end of the piece of equipment from the other):

female port on hub -> male end of long wire running through wall / other male end -> female/female at wall jack -> male end of some short wire / male end -> female connector on computer NIC

That is, we are looking for the female/female connector to put in the face plate.  We already own the long male/male wire.

All we can find are these connectors that crimp on to the end of a piece of CAT5 wire without any other connector on the end (neither male nor female).  We would have to cut off the already-present male end of the long networking wire, and then crimp some new connector on.  This seems like a waste and prone to error.  Isn't there a simple female/female connector for use at a face plate?  Where can I buy a few of these?

Points go to whoever can supply the name of a reputable vendor who ships in the U.S.  If the only answer is "there is no such connector," points will not be awarded since this is impossible to verify and since we've already found a possible (though unappealing) alternative.

Thanks!
