The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Computer Freezes, especially when I play games.

Computer Specs:
Motherboard: ECS K7S5A v3.0
CPU: Athlon XP 1800+
RAM: 256 PC133
Power Supply: 300W (I can't remember the make)
Video Card: Best Data GeForce 4 MX 440
OS: Windows 2000

Problem:
My computer freezes randomly, but it always happens if I play a game, (besides the usual minesweeper, etc.) and fairly often if I watch movies on system for an extended period.

Steps Taken Thus Far:
Updated Windows
Updated Drivers for EVERYTHING
Formatted Hard Drive, reinstalled Win2000 and updates only.
Formatted Hard Drive, installed Win98 and updates only.
Ran System with only GeForce and Hard Drive.
Ran System with old Riva TNT and Hard Drive.
Redistributed IRQs as best as possible.
Disabled EVERYTHING non-essential

Status Now:
I am pretty certain the problem is not software related.  I have also checked the system and CPU temperatures and they are easily in exceptable range.  I now think that the problem is either the motherboard or the power supply.  In regards to this I have two specific questions:
1. If the power supply, being only 300W, is too weak, would this cause the system to freeze?
2. I'm not really sure about this one, but could my motherboard not be able to withstand the voltage or something (this is the second one I bought because the first one burnt out as soon as I tried using it and I returned it.)?Start Free Trial
