The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. hard disk causing boot problem

i got a new hard drive last weekend & when i went to copy the files from the old one, it was unreadable within windows xp (perhaps from getting jarred around a little... i'm not sure).  i booted to dos via a floppy & i was able to navigate the directories & copy files without any problems, but any utilities that used long file names were inoperable (like ldir, lcopy, etc.).  i deduced that the problem was within the bios parameter block & specifically the fields applicable only to fat32 (b/c the hard drive was being recognized as fat16).  in an effort to resolve the issue, i manually altered a few values within a hex editor and norton diskedit.  Eventually the dos programs designed to use long file names displayed garbled information (as opposed to halting with an error message) so i figured it was a step in the right direction.  after changing a couple more settings and restarting, my computer refused to boot.  it would get to where it accessed the floppy to boot, but it froze.  when i disconnect the old hard drive everything works normally and it boots without a hitch.  i'm led to believe that it's something with the data ON the hard drive as opposed to a physical error in the hard drive because i didn't even touch the computer between the last time it booted w/ the hard drive & when it hung at boot.  how can i recover the data on the hard drive or at least get to a point that i can reformat it so it's not a useless hunk of metal?
