Question

Need Help with Bios Update to Install WD 60GB Caviar 7200rpm 8mb cache

Asked by: Kathy996

I recently receive a Western Digital HD (Western Digital Caviar 60Gb 7200rpm 8Mb cache) that i would like to install. The problem is that my bios seems to see it at random times !Here's the technical note:
On my Primary Master (a 40Gb,7200rpm,ATA 100, Seagate Barracuda ATA IV Model No.ST340016A) I have a dual boot for Win2000 Pro/Win 98 (Win 98 is used only from time to time!)

When i tried to install the new HD as a Primary Slave (Primary master jumper set to cable select with a connection at the end of the IDE cable (primary!) and the new HD with jumper set to Dual Slave)it caused my bios to not saw my Primary Master (the Seagate) and the Primary Slave(the Western Digital).

I also tried to install the new HD as a Primary Master without my Seagate just as a test, with jumper set to factory default (pin 1-2) and without jumper (Single or Master) but still no luck!

I searched for an update to my bios:
Program:   Unicore BIOS Agent Version 1.9
BIOS Date: 02/28/02
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
BIOS ID:   02/28/2002-SiS-730-6A6ISE19C
BIOS Eval: K7SEM Ver 1.1e 02/28/2002
Chipset:   SiS 730 rev 2
Superio:   ITE 8705/SiS 950 rev 2 found at port 2Eh

but everytime i found something the BIOS ID is something with a date in 1999  or 2000!

Can someone can help me with my bios (good update version and how to flash it!) and all the rest!

Thank !

Kathy

Have you attempted installing the HD in IDE2 as a secondary master or slave?

"Many people have written me asking how they can upgrade their bios.
Contrary to popular belief, you can't download the latest version off of just any old ftp site and 'flash' it into your ROM.
You can indeed upgrade this way (via software) on most motherboards, but you must obtain the software from your system's manufacturer."

Set the jumper on the newer drive as "Slave", not cable select.. see if that makes a difference.

*NEVER* use cable select, its just asking for problems as indicated above.  Also, are you using the new 80 wire cable the drive should have come with, or an old cable?  What interface (ATA33/100/133) is the other drive?

Your motherboard is new enough to not need a BIOS update to work with a 60GB drive, that has nothing to do with it.  Part of the problem is that you're using a horrible piece of garbage ECS/Elitegroup/PCCHIps/Amptron motherboard in the first place, I really feel sorry for you.  If you really want to update the BIOS, this is the file you need:
