Question

Drive recognises DVD but not CD Rom

Asked by: frogmella

I have a Pioneer K11T Drive fitted to an Akhter laptop that had a bios error message (bios is Insyde 1.07), restarted and now works fine except it will not recognise CD Roms, but plays DVDs fine. Any ides?  Anyone experienced this before?

Download the new firmware:
http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/k11f_103.zip or
http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/k11f_105.zip

Try these utilities too:
http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/multimedia/software/utility/dvdutils_103.zip

It should update any bugs in the device, that might prevent it from reading certain media.

Yes, I have seen this same problem (though on a different laptop DVD drive).  What has happened is that the lens/laser within the drive that reads CD/CDR/CDRW media is damaged or dirty, but the DVD laser/lens is OK.

Just to ensure I understand you correctly...the drive was working fine, then you updated the firmware on the drive, and now it won't read CDs? If these were "region free" hacked firmwares for the drive, well sorry that's the risk you take.  Other than that, maybe one of logansfury's links will help you (look to be older firmwares than the 1.07 you're using now).  Its possible that the firmware you flased wasn't compatible with your specific revision of drive, or you couldn't update from the version you had to 1.07.

you may need a UDF file update.  i installed a new burner and it won't read CDs until i installed updated UDF files (universal data formats)

by: dogztarPosted on 2003-04-24 at 15:23:55ID: 8391657

Will it not read *ANY* CD-ROM, or do you mean specifically software install CD-ROM, "burned" CD-R or CD-RW discs, or what?

Is it possible to clean laser lens? I am living in the desert right now,may be why. Firmwares were all ok and CD ROM worked fine. CD is commercially bought language software so not a copy and has worked before.

Where would I get UDF files?

by: dogztarPosted on 2003-04-25 at 07:03:42ID: 8395366

The UDF file update wileya is referring to would be for a CD-R(W) that was created by Adaptec/Roxio DirectCD or Nero InCD (packet writing software).  As for cleaning the lens, yes you can do it, there are "cleaning discs" that will clean the lens.  They're pretty cheap so it might be worth a shot.  Is the drive slot-loading or does a little tray pop out to put the CD on?

Actually, I was just looking at one of the Dell DVD/CD-ROM drives we have, and there is only one actual lens, so more likely the laser that reads CD media is broken.

Did the drive read CDs before the firmware upgrade, and now will not?  You might want to try reflashing to the older firmwares linked above in that case.

Apparently there are different revisions of the drive, a 1.03 and a 1.05+, I don't even find a 1.07 revision.  I would definitely reflash to the 1.03 that logansfury linked (though its still not the "original"...that firmware is "region free" which means it will play DVDs from anywhere)

Yes, Ive read that, the 1.03, is a redux version, and is actually newer than higher versions.

Fraid nothing has worked so far...except giving it a bit of a bang.......and thats stopped working now! Anybody sell DVD/CD drives to fit these still? Old one is PioneerK11T.

by: dogztarPosted on 2003-06-05 at 11:30:37ID: 8659690

Well, I would assume that most generic low-profile DVD drives would fit, but it really depends on how the drive is setup internally to connect to the PC.  Have you tried contacting Akhter?

If your drive doesn't have a piece that sticks out (the side of the drive to hold the disk, if you know what I mean), maybe this one would work:
http://bizrate.com/marketplace/product_info/details__cat_id--406,prod_id--6436995,name--Toshiba%20SlimLine%20DVD.html

You might have to go with an external drive, and get a Firewire/IEEE1394 or USB 2.0 PC card...for standard CD-ROM, you could get away with a normal CD-RW on USB 1.1 (which is probably what your laptop has).

Have cleaned lens, still waiting for a reply from Akhter, had limited success after starting with Windows 98 start up floppy, read name of CD, but wouldnt access it, could be an ATAPI driver problem? Is is still possible to get drivers for a drive that is 3 years old, Pioneer DVD-ROM ATAPI DVD-K11TA 1.05 Feb 2000, 8x, 32x.Not had any luck on driverguide etc, is it a generic Pioneer ATAPI driver I need?

by: dogztarPosted on 2003-06-18 at 05:39:44ID: 8748601

Well, it would have to be a particularily rare CD/DVD drive that doesn't work right with generic Win98 boot disk CD-ROM driver...I truly believe the drive is faulty.

Think you may well be right dog but notice sometimes loads a oak technology driver in place of ms which is v confusing and sometimes works and just when I think its cured I put a different cd and I'm back to square one. May have a source for a Pioner K11T drive so I'll let you know if that sorts out the problem.

by: dogztarPosted on 2003-06-28 at 22:31:12ID: 8821378

Yes, the WIn98 disk uses a driver from OAK technologies, that is normal.
Hope things work out OK.

Thanks to all concerned, how do I split points - bought new CD DVD drive in the end. That solved the problem!

frogmella:
See here for instructions on splitting points using the "Split Points" link below: http:/help.jsp#hi69

Sorry we didn't find a better solution!  It sounds to me like the drive was just faulty and there was no way to fix it.  Did you buy a new internal unit, or external USB, just out of curiosity...

Yep, I think drive was definately faulty probably due to heat and sand. Will check out link.
