The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

crc errors - harddrive problems?

Asked by shifty_mc in Miscellaneous Hardware

Tags: harddrive, windows

Hi, really need some help - at wits end!

Right... Symptons - running WinXP which seems fine except maybe a bit sluggish (brand new built computer) and occasional 'System has recovered from serious error' messages.
                  - when trying to install software get crc errors or cabinet corrupted when I know it's fine (works on other computer)

Pretty sure it's hardware cos like I said - done all this before on second computer.

Motherboard is AT7Max2, Harddrive is serial ATA 120GB Seagate.  Don't think it's anything to do with the fact it's serial because I had an IDE in there before and same thing happened.

Using all up to date drivers, seagate's own drive setup utility, have tried installing windows directly after this partitions and formats the drive, or have also tried a heavy and light format using the windows cd.

Am at a loss! Installed, reinstalled, formatted, reformatted, downloaded all possible updates, etc etc etc!!! Any ideas?

Also I've run an up to date Norton utilities (speeddisk etc) and chkdsk /f and normally the system crashes.

Is there something in the bios?  Maybe RAID because I don't really know anything about that and that's where the harddrive is installed onto (I have to load an external HPT374 driver when I install windows (which is also up to date))

Really appreciate any help, cheers.
