I'd be surprized also if Direct CD worked well anything but CD-RW media, just be glad they are cheap now too.
I had the very first CD-RW back in April of '97 the Ricoh... I still have it and it works but it was a 2x burner and is religated to a storage box next to an 8x.
DirectCD was horrible when I used it, I'd suggest just using CD-Rs and reburning as needed, even if daily, blanks are so cheap now.
I paid $25 each for CD-RW media in '97 and regular CD-R blanks were $7-8 each, and I remember all the bad burns.... rock on!

There are known problems when using packet writing with CDR media. This was not a problem with the older version of DirectCD. Use CDRW media. NERO has never supported packet writing to CDR media(CDRW only for packet writing) and I think this is why the latest versions of EasyCD/DirectCD give this warning(just falling in line with industry standards). Hope this helps in understanding the "upgrade" as this is not a drive failure/software error, etc. T
