Question

CD-R Cannot copy. The disk is write-protected

Asked by: 4591

Hello,
I have Easy CD Creator 5.1 Platinum , updated to 5.3.5.10
on Win NT 4.0 work station with SP6.

Problem:
After formatting Direct CD is ready
BUT when  I start dragging my first folder to CD-R I get fallowing massage :
!!!!!!!
"Cannot copy. The disk is write-protected
Remove the write-ptotection or use another disk"

It's been wasting a lot of CD-R ( KODAK CD-R Ultima )
The old DirectCD 2.5d works FINE with my  HP8100 CD- writer Plus.

How to fix this problem , anyone knows ?

PS. read  Roxio Support Community & didn't see concrete answer there.

There are known problems when using packet writing with CDR media. This was not a problem with the older version  of DirectCD. Use CDRW media. NERO has never supported packet writing to CDR media(CDRW only for packet writing) and I think this is why the latest versions of EasyCD/DirectCD give this warning(just falling in line with industry standards).  Hope this helps in understanding the "upgrade" as this is not a drive failure/software error, etc. T

I'd be surprized also if Direct CD worked well anything but CD-RW media, just be glad they are cheap now too.

I had the very first CD-RW back in April of '97 the Ricoh...  I still have it and it works but it was a 2x burner and is religated to a storage box next to an 8x.

DirectCD was horrible when I used it, I'd suggest just using CD-Rs and reburning as needed, even if daily, blanks are so cheap now.

I paid $25 each for CD-RW media in '97 and regular CD-R blanks were $7-8 each, and I remember all the bad burns....   rock on!

This is true in XP not familliar with nt but since they have the same kernel you may want to go to start run msconfig and services. Check for imapi cd burning com... and if on turn off then reboot

You should not format a CD-R disk.
A CD-RW yes.

by: dogztarPosted on 2003-06-03 at 15:53:35ID: 8643503

You have to format CD-R discs to use them with DirectCD (and yes it does work).  Have you tried a full uninstall of all Roxio software, then restart, then reload and apply the patch directly?

Have you used these CD-Rs before with DirectCD?  Have you installed the 1.0g firmware:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?reg=&cc=&softitem=co213en&prodId=hpcd-write9675&lc=en&sw_lang=en

Does the drive write normally using the EZCD Creator application to these discs??

I see that now dogztar  I guess I just haven't done that with a CD-R disk. I just drop them in and they work.

Well....
Since 1998 or 1999 I had HP8100 CD- writer Plus.

I had installed updated drivers in 1999 (I think)
Adoptec Easy CD Creator 3.5c  but didn't use it
Adoptec Direct CD 2.5d  --- use it all the time as backup etc. daily
&  CD Copier Deluxe
They worked  fine !!!

*bravado you had a bad luck or did something wrong, my HP worked fine
till I bought Creator 5 & now I'm trying to solve the problem.

*Snowguy >>>>You should format a CD-R disk. OH ! Yes :)))

*dog
- CD-R KODAK CD-R Ultima (silver + gold , good Cd's bought 100 couple years ago)
- Firmware1.0g is in the place
- Yes, I'm the administrator work station Win NT 4.0 SP6
- Creator 5.3.5.10 , Direct CD works fine with CD-RW only problem appears
with CD-R , which I use the most :(
warning !!!!!!!
"Cannot copy. The disk is write-protected
Remove the write-ptotection or use another disk"

So you had Creator 5 on machine with Win NT 4.0 & you say Direct CD worked
with CD-R (CD Recordable Disc) ??? That's what I'm after .

by: 4591Posted on 2003-06-08 at 17:34:26ID: 8678512

Finally, today I could clean uninstall of Easy Cd Creator from my system and
then re-install the software and install the latest updates.
Problem with Easy CD Creator 5.3.5.10 & CD-R is not resolved
I still WASTE my TIME & CD-R's  ( CD Recordable Discs )
trying to use DirectCD 5.3.5.10.

Uninstalling  included: renaming, cleaning registry etc.
was big WASTE of my time with NO positive results at all !

After reinstall the software I still CAN NOT copy directly to CD-R (Recordable)
& get the same warning :
"Cannot copy. The disk is write-protected
Remove the write-protection or use another disk"

The old Adaptec DirectCD 2.5d worked FINE with my  HP8100 CD- writer Plus.

Has anybody used DirectCD 5.3.5.10. & CD-R  ( CD Recordable Discs )
with a success ???

or

is this Easy CD Creator 5.3.5.10

piece of junk !!

by: dogztarPosted on 2003-06-09 at 17:37:34ID: 8686760

Do you have anti-virus installed possibly?  Disable it temporarily, or set it to not scan the CD-R drive.  I think the error is more of an NT error than DirectCD...

Can you burn data using the Easy CD Creator program, instead of DirectCD??

Hello dogztar & tmj883,

Thanx for you input . I'm very busy now. I'll write/answer some more on the coming
weekend, 'till then.

by: 4591Posted on 2003-06-17 at 14:28:31ID: 8744448

Hello, better late then never :)
dogztar & tmj883
First of all , I have a friend who says, if any computer software is not
user friendly she will not use it.

1/. my burner works fine with old Adaptec DirectCD 2.5d as I said before.
2/. burning data using the Easy CD Creator program is ok in 1(one) finalize session.
but trying take CD-R out & put it back for a 2nd time did not work.
Frankly, I am fed up with this not user friendly piece of junk.
3/. dogztar, you never answer clearly if your DirectCD 5 worked on CD Recordable Disc,
not CD-RW = CD ReWritale Disc? Just curious :)

4/. Disc Copier (I did  not tested. I didn't have a need for it right now)

5/. VCD creator works , that was my main reason for buying it. I'm going to make same
vcd over the weekend then get ride of
NOTEasy CD Creator.

The label, photo, post card web album, slide show, video impression music cd  etc. look like for kids,
I have better professional programs.
I wasted enough  my time, money & energy on Roxio's NOTcd Creator
& judging their board a lot of people have same problems.

BTW Roxio's internet technical support is one big joke.
Answering not the question I first asked
then copy & paste uninstalling reinstalling instruction page & sanding to customer
is NOT what I call technical support !

I'm going back to the good old ADAPTEC DirectCD 2.5d.

I'll be nice to find some program to create VCD independently
then burn them on my HP8100 CD- writer Plus & ADAPTEC software.
Well...I look around.
As it looks I agree with  tmj883 Roxio is falling in line with industry standards.
What a BIG WASTE of my time, money & energy !!!
Never again I will be burned by Roxio's NOTcd Creator .....hahahaha.... :)

Thanx for your help; if no more commends I will finish my question.

Ps. VCD quality is not so great with this mpeg1 compression I get better
results with Window & QT codecs but they do not work on VCD.

Aside from the above, when you get a new burner with NERO burning rom, this ripper works very well at DVD to VCD2.0, DVD to SVCD1.0 and DVD to DivX, whatever your preference. The ripper is
DVD to DivX Ripper 2.0 and is available free download from CNET. It works very well with NERO to convert and burn movies to CDR. T

>>3/. dogztar, you never answer clearly if your DirectCD 5 worked on CD Recordable Disc,

Last time I tried it, it worked, I don't have DCD installed on this machine however.

The problem in using CDR media for packet writing is basically this: each time a file is added to the CDR a new TOC(table of contents) must be written for the disk. TOCs are relatively large and when the new TOC is written it replaces the old TOC, but with CDR this becomes wasted/unusable space as the old TOC cannot be erased/rewritten. Thus after adding several files, the free disk space is greatly reduced or the disk becomes unusable. This does not occur with CDRW as the TOC is rewritten on the old TOC with no loss of free space other than the added file. DirectCD 5 did not work for me with CDR media although DCD 2.5 did work. I go tired of Roxio and switched to NERO. By the way, DVD to DDivX Ripper is supposed to work with Roxio but I have not personally tried it. Good luck...T

by: 4591Posted on 2003-06-19 at 20:34:38ID: 8763363

Thanks dogztar & tmj883,

I cannot use DVD to DivX Ripper 2.0 because NT4  is not included there, also
I don't have a DVD player nor burner on my machine. :)
I only use VCD creator to burn my movies to play out side of my computer.

There's one thing if you don't mind.
Please, bear in mind that I'm not a computer expert but user & in to CG, so my system's knowledge is limited.

This is an excerpt what roxio technical support sent me :

"4. Rename additional files on your hard drive

NOTE: All files in the list might not be found

a. Click on the "Start" button, and then select "Search"
b. Search your Local Hard Disks for the following files:

CDR4_2k.sys
CDR4_XP.sys
Cdr4dll.dll
Cdr4vsd.sys
Cdr4vsd.vxd
Cdral.dll
CDRALw2k.sys
Cdrtc.dll

c. If found, right click on the file and then click on "rename".
Change the file extension to ROX
   (i.e. cdrtc.dll would be renamed to cdrtc.rox) "

I did that ; however after reinstalling CD Creator 5 the program created new
Cdr4dll.dll
Cdr4vsd.sys
Cdr4vsd.vxd
Cdral.dll
Cdrtc.dll
& does not connected with rename .rox extension files so I wrote to roxio technical support:
"Renaming system files without directing software path
to them doesn't do anything."

I wonder if there's any way to properly direct the path to those
rename .rox extension files. Perhaps this would solve my problem ?

Ps. dogztar I like to give you some points too for your advise.
I'm going to create a new poste  titled " Easy CD Creator 5.1 no good"
with 1(one) point .....hahaha...., when you answer I'll increase points if this is all right with you :)
