Question

Generic KVM Switch - Mouse Stops Working

Asked by: MNetwork

I just installed a new KVM swich for my 2 servers and 2 workstations in my basement. I can switch fine and see all the screens and use the keyboard. But after a few times I switch, the connection to the mouse drops on all the computers and then I have to restart one of them to get it to work again. After I restart one of the computers the mouse for all the computers works, but then drops soon. I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix this, or knows of a program that could reinitialize the mouse within windows without restarting.

Two possible problems here:

1) The KVM use are using is a "cheap" one that does not properly "spoof" the mouse protocol.

2) The specific mouse you are using is incompatible with the KVM.  I've seen many more problems with Logitech mice, for example, than with MS mice.

But without specifics on your situation it's difficult to provide any more information.

I am using a Microsoft IntelliMouse 1.1A PS/2 with a Generic 4-Port KVM Switch Box.

In that case, I'd suspect the "generic" KVM switch.  Try returning it and getting a better one.  I have a Cybex SwitchView and have never had such problems.

Do you feed power to this KVM unit with its own power brick or through its computer connections? If you're not using the brick, try hooking it up.

This is self-powered. I got this switch from my school. They were using it on 4 old NT4 servers. It was flaky at times, but if you switched it back and forth enough the mouse and keyboard would work fine. Now when I use it the keyboard ALWAYS works find and the mouse has this wierd problem where it drops the connection totally.

>>.It was flaky at times

Hmmm, so what leads you to believe that it should work properly now?

by: MNetworkPosted on 2003-06-07 at 10:59:35ID: 8673302

The problem is that the switched worked fine at school. THe mouse never truly lost the connection, I would just have to switch back and forth a few times to get it again. Now, I have to restart one of the comps to get it to work.

It seems that ditching the intelli mouse has worked. I used a cheap logitec mouse that I had laying around and now the switch works fine... Thanks!

Never mind, I'm still having the same problem. THe mouse thing didn't help. I thought it did, but it didn't.
