Check out the refurbished systems on the big name manufacuturer sites. Alot of the systems that are being sold as refurbs are either still brand new due to errors in shipping or systems that are returned somewhere between 1 and 30 days of the original sale. If it isnt brand new it is still covered by atleast a 90 day system warranty that can be upgraded as if it were new because the system is new to you. Just look into the system that you want and see if the company is selling a refurb system with similar specs.

Nope. Laptops are preassembled. There is no such thing as a generic footprint motherboard for laptops. You can assemble one from parts by ordering all the parts from your favorite vendor but of course this will be cost prohibitive; laptops contain about twice their assembled retail value in spare parts.
If you want, you can assemble your own luggable. Luggables take standard (smaller types) PC footprint motherboards.
