The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not?   • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Newly built computer - cannot install operating system

I just finished building a new computer with everything I thought I needed.  The problem is, I can't get an operating system installed on either of my drives.  The computer is:

Intel D850EMVRL motherboard
Intel P4 2.8 GHz
512 MB Samsung 1066 RDRAM
WD Caviar 20G - master
WD Caviar 120G - slave
Lite-On 522452 CD-RW
Matrox G450 dual head video card
Kensington optical mouse
Microsoft Keyboard

I can boot to BIOS just fine, see all the drives, memory, etc.  I even installed Red Hat on the 20G drive on another computer which runs just fine, including reading CD drive, but Windows won't install.  I've tried installing Win2K Pro evaluation, Win2k Pro, Win2k Server and during setup my keyboard (which responds fine in BIOS/Red Hat) won't accept input when prompted to hit enter to continue with installation (first prompt, lights go off immediately before prompting).  I've even tried installing Win98 and setup is more successful but never gets past 73% complete before hanging.  Red Hat setup also hang during setup ("reading package") from this computer.

I have tried installing from other CD drives, different IDE cables, different keyboards (USB & PS/2) and installing Windows from other computers which only results in 'inaccessable boot disk' errors.   This is my first attempt at building my own computer and I begin my first IT job in a few weeks.  I would appreciate any help and will award the my 'starter' 125 points to anyone who can help get my computer up and running.
