I'm running a Compaq 5110 with a Philips CDD4801 CD/RW and the drive refuses to write from any software. I've tried Roxio's bunches of crap and even the ever popular Nero 5, but the computer still refuses to write.
I know Compaq is notorious for making crappy computers, and as far as I can tell it is a drivers problem. In fact, everytime windows boots up (WinXP Pro) it informs me ever so tactfully that it has disabled DirectCD5 drivers because they will cause instability with the system. I have been unable to find any updated drivers for either the CD/RW drive itself, or windows.
As I can the drivers for the recording hardware (system32/drivers/cd4_2k.s
ys and .../cdralw2k.sys) came from Adaptec (what do they have to do with anything?).
Philips people say that Compaq deals with what comes with their computers, Compaq people don't lists anyting on their site about the drive and have little else to offer.
If anyone has anything to tell me about how to make the drive write to CDs again I would be most apreciative. Hopefully I listed all the info needed to look into the matter. Feel free to ask more questions.
