If you have already partitioned the 80 gig with a single 80 partition and  begun loading it up, you're stuck.
you have to repartition the 80 gig and you can't do that without first removing the partition that's on it.
If you have a CD RW I suggest backing up the data you have on it, OR depending on how much and how much SPACE you have on the 20 gig, transferring the data there. either way clean off the 80 gig.
once that is done you can use Norton Ghost to "clone" your current system over from the 20 to the 80.
OR if you don't have that or anyother similar utility (often something to do this comes with the new drive),
you can clean install a new copy of XP, reinstall from roms all your personal fav-whatever's... then copy your data off the 20 (or the roms wherever you put it). At this point the 80 would be the primary master the 20 the primary slave. if you need more detailed guidance just ask, I'm happy to oblige.

the problem was you didn't partition the 80 gig (assuming). this time partition it.
15 or 20 gig C: drive, the rest I would split evenly, 2 - 30(-ish) gig D: and E: drives.
that way next time you'll have the flexibility to move all your data to a "back yard" partition and do as you please with the C: drive OP/SYS-wise.

There is a utility to do a non-destructive repartition.  It is called FIPS, and you can find more about it here:
http://www.igd.fhg.de/~aschaefe/fips/

I suggest you read the documentation thoroughly, and backup any critical data before using the utility.

good luck.
If you have a CDRW drive it shouldn't be too big a deal. How much data is on the 80 gig anyway?
Feel free to ask me any questions you might have about partitioning or re-installing Windows.

can i put the data on the dvd r
and can i install my version of win xp on the 80 gb
without buying a new serial number, i just have one copy
can i still install it?or do i need to buy one more copy of win xp?

by: netmonPosted on 2003-08-16 at 10:26:14ID: 9166077

OH! you have DVD-R drive? YES! Fabulous. that's over 4 Gigs a pop!
NO you DO NOT need to buy a second copy of XP! Did you get an XP CD-ROM with your computer or is the only "restore" a "utility" on the Hard-drive ? IF so we can DEAL with that but much better if you have a ROM.

OR with the DVD writer drive you should be able to use noton ghost or something like it to "image" or clone your current XP instalation in a single file on a single disk. Very convenient.

What burner software are you using? (include Version)

Partition magic will solve your problem but XP has a tendency to get buggy when used with PM after XP is installed.  I would use the larger HDD as the c drive and move your stored files to the smaller drive if they will fit.  Then reinstall XP from scratch on the larger drive with the small one attached as D:

If you have room you can leave the old xp installed to go back if you have major problem reinstalling the XP OS.

I don't know if you've read the entire history of the question and comments, but, that's basically what I said in my first comment.

I've just completed a very similar operation using Partition Magic 8.0, which did cost $40.  Most of the bugs are either fixed in the new version or dealt with on the PowerQuest website.  What I would do is this:  Use PQMagic to re-size the 80 Gb partition to 60 or a little less, like 55.  Then move the partition to the end of the drive.  Next, copy the 20 to the unallocated space on the larger drive, and then re-run PQMagic in order to un-hide the partition -- I haven't read all the stuff on it, but it hides this partition by default.  Then remove the small drive, use the correct cable connection to attach the 80, and you are in business.  The question now becomes, when you give away the 20, will the recipient be able to use it without reformating?  We'll respond to that one when needed.
