Hi
I have a Pentium III 800MHz M6vcg BIOstar MotherBoard with 128Megs of RAM and a 30gig Western Digital Hard drive. It's also got a 50x generic cd. The Hd.Drv is udma66 and the cd is udma33.
I just performed a clean reinstallation of WIN98 from CD and the autoshutdown feature worked just fine at every step of the re-installation of other software... up to a point. Then, all of a sudden when I'd ask it to shut down, it'd just go to the "It is now safe to turn your computer off" screen, INSTEAD of completely powering down. And, it's supposed to power down.
Here are the installation steps I followed, up to the point where the shutdown stopped happening.
Win 98: ok
Motherboard VIA Audio, MBrd Diagnostics, and DirectX7 (from the MBoard CD): ok
LinkSys 10/100 NIC: ok
Norton Antivirus Ver 5 for win98: ? (possible cause?)
Verizon DSL software (including Netscape Comm. ver4.73 : ? (possible cause)
After noticing that the auto-shutdown was not working properly, I logged into the DSL and the very first thing I did was update norton anti-virus. And I've rebooted the PC a couple times since then too. And, at this time, I'm going to continue installing the software the PC needs, and hopefully, I'll get someone responding to this question soon so I can fix this right away.
Somewhere, from Norton installation, to the DSL install, the auto-shutdown feature craps out.
Can anyone educate me on why that happens?
Like, is there some PARTICULAR feature of the Windows 98 OS that controls this shutdown that gets modified/corrupted and it fails to trigger the MotherBoard properly?
And if so, HOW do I fix it?
It'd just be nice to NOT have to reach around behind the machine to hit the switch on the power supply.
Thanx in advance for any rapid response I get. Right now it's 9am Eastern time (US) and I'll check back here approx every 15 min. ...As long as nothing gets in the way of my doing so...
Hopefully, there's just some SIMPLE file that needs re-copying or some little OS trickie-poo thing that can be done to correct this.
I've loaded and re-loaded this machine before, and never had this problem... that I can recall... or, if I did, I guess it "self corrected" if there IS such a thing.
I've virus scanned the ONLY floppy disks that have touched this machine, (the boot floppy and the linksys nic drivers) and there are no virusus that the scanner detected.
Any clues to fix this appreciated: I'm assiging a 'healthy' number of points just 'cause I hope to get this done soon...
;->
Sincerely
Steve
