Try connecting them trough a powered hub. Then that hub will support power to all of your usb divices and give them all the power they need.
You said => Is there something wrong with the motherboard?
Might be, but maybe you just tried to get too much power of an usb-port, have you tried connecting just one usb-device on each port and leaving the others off?

I dont have a powered hub, and i have tried only connecting one usb device per port but still no.  This problem just happened to me recently.  Before, all the devices worked.  Is there a way to fix it without buying additional hardware?

Hi

Well it sound's like a lack of power but to be sure please tell us what device's (hardware) you have on your PC?

Also check in device manager to see if the USB ports are all working well, try and upgrade drivers if you need to.

Make sure you have SP1 for XP from M$.com.

What watt(age) is your power supply?

Maybe you can borrow a powered usb-hub from a friend just to find out if it works, there might be a problem with your usb-ports. Have you changed anything in your computerconfiguration lately?

by: darkrainPosted on 2003-08-27 at 04:54:43ID: 9231498

Perhaps Windows XP is closing the ports down with it power saving options. Go to device manger and expand the usb ports. Right click and select properties. Then check the power options.

I will post you better info but i am at work and coming to the end of my lunch hour

Check through your BIOS on the motherboard.  I had a problem with my USB devices once and I realized that in my BIOS I changed it back to defaults which disabled the USB port.  I don't know exactly where it is in the BIOS but there is a setting for USB.

If some devices are still working, but others are not, then I would suspect a partially damaged USB controller.

An external hub may resolve this.

I hope this helps !

Hi,
Dont wanna offend You but R U using a laptop or any micro factor mobo which doesnt have bus-powered USB ports ? Maybe U should check that cauz if so, U wont be able to run any USB devices off Ur PC. Also, in Ur BIOS, make sure Ur USB is not disabled. Sometimes even if diasbaled, XP might detect Ur port cauz of a BIOS bug ut then will give U problems in usage. Did U recently replace ur CMOS battery ? If its a AT based for factor, the ports are connected onto the chasis separately by a 4wire cable from the motherboard. Check it has proper contact & no wire is broken for either pins. I think its something more tangible then configuration thats troubling U...

I still think that a powered usb-hub should solve all of your problems. I also don't believe that usb is disabled in your bios because you stated: "Recently alot of my usb devices that does not have an outside engery source are not working with my usb ports." so I assume that you don't have a problem using usb-devices which use an external power supply.

im having recent concerns about my usb ports, i believe that no power is reaching them at all,  I have tried connecting a tablet to the ports but a warning message apears stating that the device has exceed the power limits of the hub.  What can i do now?

by: LucFPosted on 2003-08-30 at 01:06:03ID: 9253393

That might be the problem, maybe with all your divices wich don't have an external powersupply you overloaded your usb-ports and damaged it's powersupply (not your computers power supply) Powered usb-hubs aren't that expensive and I still believe it'll solve the problem.

what is the system loaded with?
if you have too much devices put in the system, the smps may not be able to provide enough juices to each

As I mentioned previously.

Test with a single low power device that has worked in the past.

If it does not work, it sounds like your USB ports have been damaged.

 I hope this helps !
