Question

EXTREME SLOWDOWN WHEN COPYING CD TO CD

Asked by: alanmadden

help!!

only got 125  points so you can have them all, if i get more points they will be added to this quesiton.

this is really becoming a problem!

I have already posted a message on here regarding this problem, but with no avail.

the situaiton was that i was having a problem copying cd to cd on my pc,it was starting to burn the discs at 32x but within a few seconds the copying speed drops to 1x or 2x. yet copying data from either of my 2 hard drives was at 32x no problem. originally thought it was a problem of a bottlenecked data on one ide cable.

to overcome this it was suggested by members of the forum that i should rearrange hard drives and the cdrom and the cd burner on my pc.i thought that would solve the problem but it does not. the problem still exists.

i have since tried every possibly combination of hard drives and cd drives on the two ide cables and every combination of jumper settingS on the back of the devices., i also replaced my cables which are now ata133 compliant cables. my hard drives i beliEve are ata100 as is my burner. i also have the jumpers on all devices now set to CS - cable select.

the preferred option suggested was to have one hard drive and one cd rom device on each cable.(the hard drives were masters)

my ide controllers have via 4 in 1 drivers installed, and appear to have no problems, all devices have 'dma if available' selected in properties. despite all the suggestions it makes no difference. my motherboard is an asus a7vl-vm 1000Mhz Athlon, if thats any help.

i have also noticed that there is various modes of dma i.e. dma mode 2 dma, ultra 5 etc. what do these mean, are they important or relevant to this matter?

i have tried nero and easy cd creator, the buffer levels shown on the software dont even get close to 100% when copying , the problem is common, so I dont think its anything to do with the software im using. all my hardware is relatively new, but my suspicions lie with the cdrom drive, its an lg 52x black cdrom drive, not sure of the model number, it came with the pc.however my system used to copy cd to cd no problem on win98 when i used it, i now usd winxp pro sp1.

it could also be something to do with bus mastering, bios (never updated it too scared to do this!),ide drivers (but they appear fine),what is the difference between dma and pio, i know what they mean but why is it important and can these make a difference?

my next step could be to replace my cdrom device.but before i do this i would like to ensure it will solve the problem.my current setup is:
ide 0 - 60gb hard drive with operation system (master slave) & cd rom device (slave)
ide 1 - 20gb hard drive - storage data (master) & cd writer (slave)

just for info my cyber cd rewriter is a high spec, cyber also deny its a problem in that drive, they seem to thing its a bus thing!

is there any software i could use to help identify the problem also?

when also booting xp,there is a long black screen delay about 15 seconds (after the startup screen with the moving bar), i wonder if this delay is the system trying to recognise the hard drive, possibly linked to this problem as its also on the ide cables? also aspi layer upgrade has been suggested ot me? what the hell is this and is it relvant to this problem?

if anymore info is needed get back in touch

Yeah, the first thing that you can do is to find where the problem is. To do this you can do some checks:

a) Try to do a CD Image from a CD-Rom to your hard disk. If the image is done in normal time the CD-Rom reads fine.

b) If a) worked try to do a CD-CD copy without the "on the fly" switch. This will do a CD image and after its done it will write it to the CDR. If this works the problem is on the read - write work.

c) If b) worked the problem may be in the PCI mastering. Here there is a patch to solve this problems with mobo ASUS and chipset VIA: http://www.georgebreese.com/net/software/readmes/vlatency_v020b21_readme.HTM

Waiting your feedback if this not help.

When you copy many Mbytes from the first cd-rom to the hard drive did you have any problem ?
When you write from your hard drive to the cd-writer did you have any problem ?
Check your event log to see possible errors.
Check for bios updates for you cd-writer device.
Try to clean the laser lens of your cd rom device (read device) and also try another ide cable.
If you see no defference i think the problem might be your cd rom device so try another one.
I would suggest also to put your cd-writer as master (ide 1). Good Luck

You could try disabling XP's inbuilt cd burning software, type 'services.msc' into the 'Run' box press enter and the sevices will pop up. Scroll down to 'IMAPI CD-Burning Com Service'> right click>Properties>Start Up Type DISABLED>press Stop>Apply. This sometimes helps the slow boot problem.

To understand ASPI Layers go here (Nero has its own):

http://www.nu2.nu/aspi/

Is your IDE channels showing both 'Use DMA if available' and underneath showing DMA not PIO? If one shows PIO try uninstalling that channel then rebooting.

Copying CD's 'on the fly' can be a slow process, especially if they have any security measures on them or scratches as the read drive will slow down. Try copying the original to the HD then burning it from there. Also reducing the speed of the burner may help speed up the process.

As you have Nero use its Toolkit to determine the maximum sustainable read and burn speeds of your drives, this may help you isolate the problem.

First thing, get your drives off cable select...that is not the way you want your drives set up.  Make you the hard drive that contains your operating system master, and make the CD ROM reader on that drive as slave.  On the second channel, make your burner master and make the hard drive slave. Next, there is a difference between PIO mode and DMA.  PIO has to interupt the CPU to get data...DMA can directly access the memory locations..making it much faster. Second thing, your burner and your cd rom reader are not ata 100, they are only at most ATA33.  How much ram do you have in your computer?  If you do a ctrl alt delete and click on task manager, how many processes are running?  Are you doing anything with your computer while it its copying a cd?  Have you tried your burner on a different computer? that would be the thing that I would try first, I'm suspicious that it might be bad.  Remove the drive from your computer, place it in a friends computer and see if you get the same results.  If you do, you know you've got  a bad drive.  If it works fine, then you know the problem rests in your computer.  You shouldn't have to update the Bios for this to work, so don't worry about that.  Try testing the drive then get back to me...answer as many of the above questions as you can as well.

ok everyone thanks for the feedback.

answers to your questions

if copying disk to disk and going to hard drive first, tihs also takes ages.

miror:

if using explorer then no problem doing the above, it happens very quickly.

When you write from your hard drive to the cd-writer did you have any problem ?
no problems doing this this happes at the d writers maximum speed 32x

Check your event log to see possible errors.

this happens in event viewer

bios updates for cd writer????

Try to clean the laser lens of your cd rom device (read device) and also try another ide cable.

ide1 cd burner as master & storage hard drive as slave.

got only  34% performance working, only usual processes, my satart up items are minimal, i also turn off virus software when burning and have net disconnected when burning

burner has been tried on a win98 pc, it goes like a flying machine, the drive is functionally sound i think.

thanks again everyone

Alright, so we're sure the burner works.  What operating system are you using?  If its 2k, make sure you upgrade to SP4.  If you're using XP, make sure you upgrade to SP1a.  Have you looked around to see if there is a firmware update for your burner? that is what miror is talking about.

What motherboard do you have? Make and chipsett (BIOS revision if you know it too) etc..

Also, what model of CD-RW and CD-ROM do you have?

Obviously the CD-RW is PERFECTLY FINE since it writes at 32x on it's own when writing data from the hard-disk, so don't let anyone worry you about that! :o)

My first recommendation is (while the problem is still occuring) copy the disks to your hard-drive before writing, it's more reliable anyway.
There is an option in the nero write dialog that will perform this for you just before writing, and if you have a fast CD-ROM you won't notice too much (unless you copy LOTS of disks).

When you click on "Copy CD"  in nero (I am assuming you use nero as most people do, if not I'm very sorry and will tell you the equivalent option in other programs if you ask), on the right-hand side click the 'copy options' tab, then unselect 'on the fly'. Nero will now copy the CD to a cache file on your hard-disk before burning (This process would probably be faster that trying to burn directly from a CD if it's dropping to 2x!).

If you have no performance gain after reconfiguring you master/slave options on your IDE devices, then give a shout and I'll try and help if I can!

nilknarf,

read me original mail to the forum, it details my motherboard, os, configurations, and what ive tried also, when doing a cd to cd copy and copying via the hard drisk first - thisis still a problem it takes ages to copy to hard disk also.

from device mgr : here are the details all devices have auto detect, and dma if available

ide 0 (Hrd drive ultra dma mode 5) & (cdrom multi word dma mode 2)
ide 1 (burner ultra dma mode 2)  & (hard drive ultra dma mode 5)

im using an asus a7vl-vm. now someone has also suggested to me about 18 months to 2 years ago when my board hit the market, there was an issue with via 4 in 1 drivers and chipsets, bt patches were release. anyone know any thing about this?#

also found out my cd drives are
burner cyber cw088d
cd rom is lg 8402b

hope this helps

Hi, again.  I'm sorry your problem is not solved.

The problem may be in the CD-ROM.

Try this:     Create a image of a CD in the disk using the CD-ROM as the reader. How long does it take?
Create a image of a CD in the disk using the CD-RW as the reader. How long does it take?

What is the reading speed of your CD-ROM?
What is the reading speed of your CD-RW?

Does the problem still occur if you disconnect both data and power cables from you second hard disk?

How powerful is your power supply unit?

Didn't you say that you downloaded the newest chipset drivers?  Perhaps a good thing would be to try flashing your bios..if it doesn't fix your problem, there will be other benefits that you get from it.   What OS are you using?

by: NilknarfPosted on 2003-09-09 at 15:16:35ID: 9324584

alanmadden, when was the last time this system was ran with windows 98?

Have you always had this problem with XP or is this something that just happened one day?

Don't know if anyone mentioned this but you may want to update you ASPI layer, get the latest ASPI drivers for XP from:

http://download.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi_471a2.exe

Download the file and extract the files to a folder. Run aspichk.exe to see if the ASPI driver files are installed correctly. If they aren't (or are very old) open a command prompt and navigate to the folder that the files are in and type "install xP32" without the quotes. After it's done restart your computer, run aspichk.exe again to see if it worked correctly.

ASPI defines a software layer between the device controllers and the operating system, I have had nero act strangely because of ASPI issues before, and hey, it's worth a try! :o)

-Mike.

by: NilknarfPosted on 2003-09-09 at 15:19:08ID: 9324596

P.S. If you have run the batch file correctly it should say:

"Step 1 of 3 : REGISTRY MODIFIED FOR ASPI32"
        1 file(s) copied.
"Step 2 of 3 : COPYING ASPI32.SYS"
        1 file(s) copied.
"Step 3 of 3 : COPYING WNASPI32.DLL"
        1 file(s) copied.

by: mirorPosted on 2003-09-09 at 22:31:28ID: 9326350

alanmadden, tgtcat69 sorry about my "bios update" suggestion,  i want to say cd-writer firmware update.
http://www.spk.1afm.com/firmware.htm for cd-rom
http://www.cyberdrive.de/en/download.php?op=search&query= for cd-writer.

for event message (....ImapiService..) i found (google search) this
"This service operates that cool “drag and drop” CD burn capability. You will need this service to burn CD's. What is the good news? If you set this service to manual, the service starts and stops itself when used with some software packages. This is practically the only service that does do this! If you still cannot burn a CD with it on manual, switch to automatic and feel safe that it starts only when “needed.” This service may take up about 1.6 MB of memory in an idle state."
so this message seems to be no problem.

Also from your tests it seems that your cd-drive and your cd-writer works fine so you do not need to buy new.

I can think two last possibilities,  first perhaps you try to copy from bad cd's (scratches ,dust...) and second you have somewhere software (drivers) problem. The second possibility as you can imagine is the hardest to solve. So if I were you, after the  hardware work (tests, ide arrangement…)  that you already done, now I would remove everything software (drivers, burning software, os patches related with…) and reinstall it step by step checking for errors, conflicts ....

Good Luck

hi all
more question answers..

power supply is fine on pc, all parts getting enought power.

if i disconnect my 2nd hard drive on the seoclnd ide channel - the problemis still there.

my system ran win98 for 2 years, done a fresh formant and instll of xp recently - this is swhen the problems happened with the burner.

i have tried several cds - none are scratched all are flawless.

dont know if this workth mentioning but  the buffer levels on th easyy cd creator 5 software never get above 2%, i would normally expect them to get up to 98% to 100% regularly.

I think your best bet here is to trash the drive, no offense but it sounds like cheap one.  GO buy a new one, a name brand one like an LG, or my personal favorite, Mitsumi

by: NilknarfPosted on 2003-09-10 at 08:32:39ID: 9329707

XP doesn't ship with ASPI drivers by default like 98 did, so it is possible that the lack of a propper ASPI layer may be affecting ATAPI access when you are writing a CD.

I use a program to rip audio cd's to mp3's called audiocatalyst, it would only read cd's at 1x untill I installed ASPI drivers, maybe when both drives are in use by your cd writing program it uses ASPI to access the CD-ROM correctly perhaps..

So, install the latest APSI drivers from my link above, might help, might not, but it's one less thing that could be causing the problem!

:o)

can anyone tell me why i should update the aspi layers as suggested?

my drives are not scswi they are ide

my understanding is that aspi is scsi related?

by: pteroPosted on 2003-09-12 at 10:20:46ID: 9347481

no, aspi is not scsi only related

aspi are sort of the drivers for your cd

ptero

by: tgtcat69Posted on 2003-09-12 at 10:50:38ID: 9347699

they aren't drivers per se....kinda hard to describe, but i suppose for all intensive purposes, call them drivers

by: pteroPosted on 2003-09-12 at 11:35:37ID: 9347995

"sort of"

by: NilknarfPosted on 2004-04-22 at 08:39:37ID: 10890199

ASPI drivers simply provide a software layer that enables programs (CDDA32, DAT2WAV..) to communicate with SCSI and IDE ATAPI devices, such as CDROM and DAT drives. Like the standard software interface that directX provides for all graphics cards (however ASPI drivers are not as standard, due to Microsoft and Adaptec wanting to use their own standards! - NT uses SPTI or 'SCSI Pass Through Drivers', but these aren't as well catered for as ASPI).

If I remember right, windows talks to CD ROM drives like they are SCSII devices, even if they are IDE drives. I suppose this is the way windows was designed. Anyway, ASPI drivers are just interpreting the commands that windows sends to the drives so that they can be carried out by IDE devises (and vise versa).

So Alan, what turned out to be the problem in the end? Was the IMAPI CD-Burning Service to blame, was is firmware related, or was it just something to do with other drivers/software on your system?
