Browse All TopicsI have a generic-brand laptop (HugeBee). It's running WIndows XP and Slackware Linux in a dual-boot system. Recently, I bought a USB mouse for it. The mouse worked fine in Windows, but I was having trouble getting it to work under X. But the other day, when I turned the computer on and booted into windows, it took over 7 minutes to load! This laptop is fairly new and the OS is still clean, and it generally boots in about a minute. Slackware takes longer than usual to load as well, though it's not as extreme as Windows. I tried unplugging the USB mouse and rebooting. Same deal. I unplugged everything--headphones, mouse, network cable, and even the power cord. It still took an eternity to boot. Just for fun I booted from the XP CD and loaded the recovery console. The CD seemed to load OK, but the console took forever. I don't have experience with the XP recovery console, though, so maybe that's normal. I ran Chkdsk, and it found no problems.
Intel Speedstep technology is disabled in the BIOS, so it's not underclocking the processor. And since both OSes seem to be experiencing a slowdown, I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem. The laptop is still under warranty, so I'm working on that, but this tiny company is taking their own sweet time about getting back to me. So if someone here could give me some suggestions, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!
Nathan
