The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Windows installer crashes (!) with new motherboard

Hey,
I recently bought a MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR motherboard for my desktop PC. I transferred all my hardware (list below). I want to start out with a clean install, so I formatted the HD and plugged it in. When I boot from the Windows 2000 install disc, it gets me to the point where I can either start the recovery console or install Win2k. So I select the option to install it. Then it says "Please wait..." at the bottom of the screen. After a second or so, I get a couple of ASCII characters on the screen and it appears to lock up. Capslock, Numlock, etc. don't toggle the LEDs. I went to dinner and left it on that screen, and when I got back, still nothing.
I tried the WinXP install disc that I have for my laptop, and I got different ACSII symbols but still no install. I have tried running it several times with different hard disk configurations, and nothing changes.

Here is my hardware:
MSI K7N2 (nForce 2 chipset) Delta ILSR motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2200+ processor
512 MB DDR SDRAM
3 hard drives:
1: 80 GB IBM
2: 15 GB Maxtor
3: 80 GB Maxtor
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
450W Power supply

I've tried tweaking the BIOS with no different results. I've tried using just one or one and two hard drives (different combinations). The only time anything changed was when I booted with NO hard drives on IDE 1/2 and one hard drive runnind off the onboard RAID controller. Then the installer told me that it needs a boot drive in order to install Windows, and when it tried to reboot me then the weird characters appear.

If anyone can solve this problem soon I'd really be grateful! I'm using a computer in the library and I'd like to get this solved tonight, but that may not be possible.
