I have a PC that I thought had some power - but seems incapable of playing video in games withour being jerky. I had a rally game that worked ok - but then went jerky. I bought another that was ok for a couple of weeks and has now started playing jerky also.
My system is a AMD Athlon XP2000+ (1.66Ghz) with 768MB Ram. I have today purchased a Geforce FX5200 (128MB) graphics card in an attempt to solve the problem - but having installed it everything is still jerky!!
With the new graphics card I upgraded to DirectX 9 - but still no good. I'm running Windows XP Pro.
I've loaded games onto the hard drive - rather than play via the CD and that does not make any difference either.
I don't know what to try next?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Sam

Sounds like you didn't install the motherboard's AGP driver...what motherboard do you have? If it has a VIA chipset, download the VIA Hyperion (4in1) driver from www.viaarena.com. Intel, AMD, SiS and ALi also all have chipset drivers which you need to install. Have you installed the latest Detonator drivers for your video card (www.nvidia.com)? Checked for viruses (http://housecall.antiviru

Make sure you have ALL the latest drivers.
1. Latest MoBo BIOS update, chipset driver, AGP driver, IDe driver (if any)
2. Latest NVIDIA drivers
3. Latest sound card drivers
4. Try re-installing WinXP if you got the time. If your game
still lags on a fresh OS with all the latest drivers, then you
can be sure it's a hardware problem.
Sam:
While playing any jerky game, hit Control+Alt+Del, enter the Windows Task Manager and select the Process tab. Click twice on the CPU column to sort down the processes CPU usage and note the biggest expenders. What we are after is a CPU or an I/O hogger (in this case, select the columns I/O Read and I/O Write and observe them carefully) ; if none is found then you should check if your video driver is correct.
As for the MB drivers, since you've using Windows XP Pro, you're not so outdated but I noticed that you didn't mention your MB maker and model and this is an important piece of information for us. Sometimes this may lead us discovering that there is a newer BIOS revision with the solution for your problem, who knows?

Go to www.guru3d.com and download the latest Detonator Driver for Nvidia i think it will solv the problem
Hi All,
Sorry for not coming back before - but in my attempts to resolve the problem I somehow got re-infected with the Blaster virus that has kept me at bay for a couple of days.
I'm now back up and running and will get back on my home PC later today - try some of your suggestions and provide feedback.
Thanks once again.
Sam
To avoid Blaster, be sure you go to www.WindowsUpdate.com and download the critical patches, then go back and check again. It wouldn't hurt to get the Recommended Updates also.

My Motherboard is a Mainboard L7VTA.
I have downloaded the updated VIA Hyperion (4in1) driver and loaded on the NVIDIA drivers instead of the ASUS driver that came with the graphics card.
All now seems to be working much better - I just wanted to confirm that I had the most up to date AGP drivers etc. Is that part of the VIA Hyperion (4 in 1) driver?
I will also look at upgrading the BIOS. Firstly I need to find the Mainboard (or Elite Group?) site.
I'll be back soon.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but the FX 5200 is a terrible card. In benchmarks, sometimes it had a hard time beating the GF4 4200. The DX9 upgrade wouldn't do you any good unless you were running a game that utilized the instruction set.
What games are you playing? If it makes you feel any better, I have a p4 2.4GHz with 768MB RAM. I ran Dungeon Siege on it with a 5200 and it was quite jerky. I ended up buying a Radeon 9800 Pro and now all is well.
You might try testing your RAM with a program like DocMemory and making sure you don't have a mass of programs running in the background chewing cycles. Other than that, I'm afraid you're going to need to buy a better video card.
Let us know how it works out.
