The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

re: sound card is not working after programs removed

Asked by GMartin in Miscellaneous Hardware, Computer Sound Cards

Hi Everyone:

I have a friend of mine who uninstalled several programs on a friend's computer because her hand drive was full.  To his surprise after uninstalling several programs, the audio from the sound card no longer works.  The pc is made by Dell and has a complicated desktop case for which I could not figure out how to remove to look at the chipset of the PCI sound card.  To circumvent this limitation, I ran a program called AIDA32 which revealed the sound card to be Turtle Beach Santa Cruz/Video Logic Sonicfury Audio Accelerator.  I then, went to driverzone.com and found the manufacture Turtle Beach Santa Cruz and downloaded the drivers.  The installation of the sound drivers "appeared" to go well because there were not any signs of conflicts within Device Manager of Windows XP Home.  However, when I try to play a particular sound event built into the OS, I get the following error message within Sounds & Audio Devices:  Windows cannot play the sound %SystemRoot%\media\WindowXP Battery Critical.wav.  Your sound card may be in use.  I get this error message along with the selected wav sound file whenever I test the audio.  It is almost like something is using or trying to take over the sound card, like maybe a hardware conflict.  At this point, I am not sure what to look for.  Could it possibly be an IRQ conflict between the sound card and other device?

Any suggestions or tips for resolving this situation will be most helpful.  And, to reiterate, the sound was working fine before my friend uninstalled several programs.  With this point in mind, I believe it is probably a driver issue with the sound card.

I look forward to hearing back from someone regarding this post.

      Thank you.

      George
