The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problems burning CD-R's. Clicks, Pops, Buzzing, etc....

Asked by pacumming in Miscellaneous Hardware

Have Nero 6 Win 2k with PIII 800 MHz CPU, 458mb of memory. Compaq DeskPro.

Used to have CD Creator 6 but had a lot of Blue Screens of Death with "IRQL" error messages regarding NTSOKRNL.exe (or something to that extent)--Called Roxio who put my PC in worse shape than before. Had to ghost back C drive.

Anyway took about 10 MP3 downloads wrote to CD-R as CDA using Nero and my Plextor 12x writer at different rates.

Problems: A few cracks, perhaps entire skipping of song when played back, cut off song early, buzzing on one song till it went to next. Originals were fine and did not have these defects in them. I realize this is a common problem.

Burn Results:

1. Was in PI0-4 Mode and burned CD which had a few clicks/pops and repeated the end of one song. Burned at 8x. Let software do the conversion from MP3 to CDA.

2. I then manually converted MP3 files to Windows PCM WAV format so that that might get rid of clicks, songs ending early, or buzzing on song which then skipped to next.
Burned at 4x with DMA - same problems, different areas of CD-R

3.  Now burning at 1x to see if this helps.

Have Memorex and Imation CD-R media.
Tried PIO and DMA modes.
Tried different burn speeds.
Tried playing CD-R at home and in car. Errors exist in same place in CD-R regardless of player.
CD is on secondary IDE channel and not on Hard Disk Channel.
Plextor drive is set as master.
Plextor 12/10/24A (or 32A) drive is about 3-4 years old. All firmware updates applied.

Is PC too slow? I am not using PC while burning - but do have firewall and Norton Script Block running and a Pop up blocker. I am aware of all services running and am not taxing the PC for regular use anyway. 5% CPU usage while running Nero.

PC is standalone.

I could buy a new CD-R drive but not sure this will correct problem.

In past experience when I used Roxio 5, I had problems now and then, but that was a long time ago-also less problems.

I would like to resolve this so I get a good CD burn at least 80% of time.

Thanks,
Peter
