Question

Need advice for buy a router

Asked by: gx100

Hi experts,
I got 10 PC connect peer to peer and I have an ADSL modem( RJ45). One of the PC attach to that ADSL modem and ICS enable so all others PC share internet access from my ICS enable PC.
MY problem is some PC getting very slow while access to internet.

I manage to get a router(Linksys) and let all PC direct connect to the router. That ADSL modem will attach to the router. I wonder to know this way will improve the internet browsing in all my peer to peer PC or not????If there is nothing much different I'm not going to buy the router.

What I plan to do is
Connect ADSL modem to router and the router will again connect to a network hub because the router have insufficient port. So all PC will direct connect to modem without a ICS enable server.I don't know how the perfomance will be????

Please give some advice..........Thanks in advance

I think you are going the right way.  A router/switch combination will avoid software control in your one pc and let everything be done in hardware.  That is the same technique that large companies use to manage their networks, so you are conforming to a good example.

This is how my ICS is configured, slightly different but I think the rules apply, the only difference being that my DSL modem is internal in my ICS enabled PC. My home network uses a network switch, not a hub, not a router. If you are using an ordinary network hub, the slowdowns are due to collisions and packet loss. This does not occur with a switch(switching hub) and you do not need the expense of a router. The peer group is attatched to the switch as is the ICS enabled PC...simple, fast, inexpensive.

Define the topology you wish to use before getting the device.
Software internet sharing requires a switch. Inexpensive.
Harware internet sharing requires a router. Slightly faster, more expensive.
For 12+PCs recommend router.
The Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router with 4 port switch.
To expand the number of switches for all the pcs, simply daisychain with the Linksys EZXS55W 5 port switch. 4 computers per switch. This is probably the cheapest way to enable hardware sharing for a small intranet and yet remain expandable through the daisychain with more switches.

I use a Linksys BEFSR41 Router with 4 Port switch to connect 7 PC's together and share a Broadband connection. The DSL Modem is connected to the WAN port on the Router. A 8 Port Swicth is connected to the uplink port of the router and then 3 pcs connected to the routers other ports. The remaining 4 pc's are connected to the swicth. All IP address are DHCP assigned by the router.

This means that i do not have to keep one pc on 24 /  7 to act as a server to share the internet connection. I have had no problems with this setup and it has been running for about 18 months now. I have pc's running Windows, Linux and Solaris connected with file sharing enabled on all machinces.

Routers are slower than switches.   BEFSR41  http://www.linksys.com/Products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=29&prid=561  This is the unit I use.  It works great.

the linksys BEFSR41 Router  is a good choice and can be bought though local store ( canukc , pasific ).
