Question

Sound drivers incompatible with XP

Asked by: cmiersma

Hello, I'm currently running Windows XP home edition sp1. I have an Avance logic sound card. I'll try to be as brief as possible. This system originally had Windows 2000 Pro. When I installed the critical updates I started having the random reboots and never could determine the cause. I eventually formatted the hard drive, as advised by experts exchange, and upgraded and installed Windows XP Home. Problem solved or so I thought. I attempted to use my sound card for recording and discovered the drivers were not installed anylonger. When I installed the drivers my random reboot problem returned. Windows XP gave me an error report and identified the problem as this:

An Update Is Available

Thank you for submitting an error report. The error was likely caused by:

AC'97 Audio CODEC (ALCXWDM.SYS)

AC'97 Audio CODEC (ALCXWDM.SYS) was created by Avance Logic®, Inc.. Avance Logic®, Inc. has updates for AC'97 Audio CODEC (ALCXWDM.SYS) that may correct the problem you reported. To learn more about the updates, see the Avance Logic®, Inc. Web site.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/pctech/pc-drivers1-1.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True

If the problem persists, please contact Avance Logic®, Inc. and alert them of the problem.

So i went to the link and have attempted to install the "update". When I try to install, it says this driver is not "digitally signed". I somehow found a way to use something called a "driver update tool" from the original disk and it seamed to update the driver and fix my problem. Everything worked great for about a week and now it doesn't randomly reboot but every time I reboot my system when it comes back up I get a window that says "Windows has recovered from a serious error" and then send an error report. When I send the report the above message pops up in a browser window.

So I've contacted the "realtek" support by email and they have sent me the same auto response 3 times. Of course thier recommendation is do download the updated driver which unfortunately is not working. So I'm here asking if anyone has any recommendations of what I should do now???? Please, I'll try just about anything. I have an internet based business and I'm also a musician and do recording demos with my computer so I need everything to work properly. Thanks in advance your any help you can give.
