I own a Western Digital External USB HD-120GB, Windows XP Professional SP1. For approx. six months I've been chugging along with no problems.
On Thursday of this week, I restarted my DELL 4400, and the WDC ext. drive was not recognized by the system. In device manager, it was no longer listed in Disk Drives, and in USB Mass Storage Device it was listed but had the "Device cannot connect (code 10) error message. Troubleshooting got me nowhere as Microsoft, et al only could suggest upgrade the device drivers, which were already updated by SP1-WinXP PRO.
I've gone the uninstall, reinstall route with no success. And I have one other external hard drive (Maxtor) that is working perfectly.
For the past five or six days beforehand I was fighting (literally) with one of those persistent spyware packages- CommonName, and then Msbb/Bridge. I am now fairly protected against Spyware, but now I face this problem.
I am experienced and can follow most directions regarding WinXP, etc. However, this is way above my head, and I need some assistance.

Have you tried enabling legacy USB support in the BIOS?
Have you tested the drive in another machine, to verify that the drive works?

Dunnodou: I changed to each of the USB ports on my system. No luck.
Callandor: Legacy USB in BIOS has always been enabled. Testing the drive in another machine comes tomorrow when I get to the office. I went to USB problem guide, and it did not seem to address my problem.
Ben: I have Norton Anti Virus to scan the system every Wednesday and Friday. However, I checked today also and found nothing that improved my situation. Keep the ideas coming, please.

well basically - swap cables, swap systems, swap drive for another of like
until you know which end the problem is on.
Other possibly helpfull things
Does the drive spin up ?
Does the activity indicator / power indicator on the drive/box come on ?
If the drive is hardware-dead, it may not come up as a USB device, but if it's lost it's format or has some corruption it will make no difference and still work.
I'd also consider swapping the drive independently of the USB-AT bridge and see if you can determine which end is bad - if the above things don't pan out.
Error "code 10" for Mass Storage Device in XP for external usb2 hard drive.
You hear the defualt chime when you plug in the USB drive, but it does not appear in the unplug hardware window.
It appears under Storage in Computer Management, but without a drive letter and you cannot initialize the disk or choose any other options for the physical disk. Right click only yields a worthless windows help option.
Solution
Switching the jumper on the hard drive from master to cable select solved this problem with Western Digital drives for me, event though the encloserure manufacturer (MacAlly) expicitly states to make the drive master. If you have a sealed unit, then I don't know how much help this will be.
