Question

Monitor is suddenly dim! What's going on?

Asked by: Kronikle66

I've had this monitor for about 6 or so years. It's been fairly nice to me but about 2 years ago, every time I turned the monitor on, I had to hit the degauss button on the monitor about 10-20 times before the display would show right (if I didn't there'd be a ring of unwanted color around the edges).  That's not the main problem though.

Anyway, I recently replaced my old computer with a new one that I built myself, keeping my old monitor (can't afford a new one). Everything for the first week ran perfectly. Well it's now the second week.  Everything was going fine this morning, but when I turned on my monitor when I got home, the colors were somewhat faded.  The monitor seems dim. Nothing feels like the right tint. I checked my settings (even though I didn't change anything) and reset the defaults. Didn't work. Then I decided toying around with the color settings. Still no go. I could make it look a little better but it still doesn't have the color tint or dimness/brightness like it did this morning. I tried calibrating it with some software. It changed the settings a little but the overall color didn't improve.

I don't know what to do  I DON'T want to buy a new monitor! Are there any solutions, tips, or suggestions out there? This is really bothering me =\ (Kind of strains my eyes when I have to read stuff now)

Ok, it's like losing a favorite friend, but CRTs do age and die over time.  Everything sounds normal, and if you used the monitor a lot, you should expect that 6 years would have been a long time.  There is nothing user-serviceable inside a CRT, so you can't really repair it, if that's the problem.  On the other hand, maybe your video card is acting up, in which case you can try swapping another one in or try another monitor.

My video card is brand new and so far has been working fine.  I updated the drivers as well.  My only option at this point, I guess, is to use this 10 year old monitor that's 1.5 inches smaller in both height and width.  It's very old but the color still displays correctly.  =(  I hope it can display video game graphics in the depth that I like.  =(  Man this sucks!

Callandor is right, CRTs are prone to fade as they get old and eventually just won't work any more. Like he said though, if you have a second video card lying around from your old computer put it in and see if it still has that problem. It most likely will, as I had this happen to my monitor a few years back, It had something to do with the vacum tube loosing presure, and the electron transmitters burning out because of it. You can either go with your 10 year old monitor, which I find amazing still works, but then they don't make these things like they used to. Although if you have around 100 to 150 bucks to spare though you can find a new crt monitor for a good price at pricewatch.com although be sure to check with a place like resellerratings.com to see if the place is a trusted online vendor. I would say though if that 10 year old monitor is still working good, then go with it and just start putting a little bit of money aside every month that way you can get a new one if/ when that 10 year old monitor goes.

Well the 10 year old monitor works but not for my purposes.  It can't display anything worth a crap.  Everything is blurry and most games just flat out won't run on that monitor.  =(

Guess I'm gonna have to live with the dim monitor for now. :'(
