Question

How can I tell what kind of sound card I have?

Asked by: KevnT7587

I was wondering how I could find out what kind of soundcard my computer has, because it is intregated in my motherboard. I just had to reinstall Windows 98 and my soundcard doesnt work anymore. I didn't know if I needed a driver for it or what? If you can help please do!

                                                 Thanks,
                                                Kevin

Look for a chip on the motherboard that has the name of an audio chip manufacturer on it. Examples would be Crystal, ESS, Creative, etc. That chip will often have model information on it, such as Maestro-3. If you do not locate a chip with the name of a sound card manufacturer on it, your sound may be integrated into the chipset, and the chipset manufacturer can often provide drivers. You can also go to the manufacturer of the motherboard and see if they have it listed there, or if it's a major brand, check the manufacturer's website for more details.

Use this software to identify you motherboard then go to the manufacturers website and download the drivers.  If you already now the make and model of the board then tell us and we will guide you to the right place.

If this doesnt work let me know and we'll try something else.
Here is a link

Also www.driverguide.com has a big selection of drivers.

Good luck,

If you have formatted and reinstalled then you will need to install the drivers, if you still have your Motherboard (or sometimes called Systemboard or Mainboard) CD then the drivers will be located in the Sound folder on that CD. If you need to download them then you need to know the make and model of your motherboard, this would be detailed in the motherboar manual which should come with the PC.
